Description
"Ventura" is the fourth studio album by American singer, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist Anderson .Paak. Released on April 12, 2019, by Aftermath Entertainment and 12 Tone Music, the album follows closely on the heels of his 2018 release, "Oxnard." "Ventura" is part of a conceptual series that .Paak has described as a journey through Southern California, with each album named after a different city in the region.
The album was executive produced by Dr. Dre, a frequent collaborator and mentor to .Paak. "Ventura" features a blend of soul, funk, R&B, and hip-hop, showcasing .Paak's versatility as an artist. The production on the album is lush and polished, with live instrumentation and a warm, analog feel that harkens back to classic soul records.
"Ventura" opens with "Come Home," a soulful track featuring André 3000 of OutKast. The song sets the tone for the album with its smooth grooves and heartfelt lyrics. André 3000's verse is a standout, delivering his signature blend of introspection and wordplay.
The second track, "Make It Better," features Smokey Robinson and is a highlight of the album. The song is a tender ballad about rekindling a fading romance, and Robinson's silky vocals complement .Paak's raspy delivery perfectly. The lush string arrangements and gentle guitar work add to the song's nostalgic feel.
"Reachin' 2 Much" features Lalah Hathaway and is a funky, uptempo track with a catchy hook. The song's infectious groove and Hathaway's powerful vocals make it a standout on the album. The track also features some impressive drumming from .Paak, who is known for his skills behind the kit.
"Winner's Circle" is another highlight, with its smooth, laid-back vibe and introspective lyrics. The song features some beautiful horn arrangements and a catchy chorus that will have listeners singing along.
"Good Heels" is a short but sweet track featuring Jazmine Sullivan. The song is a playful duet about a clandestine romance, with Sullivan and .Paak trading verses over a bouncy, piano-driven beat.
"Yada Yada" is a funky, mid-tempo track with a catchy hook and some impressive vocal work from .Paak. The song's lyrics touch on themes of self-reflection and personal growth, and the production is top-notch, with a tight rhythm section and some tasteful guitar work.
"King James" is a politically charged track that addresses social issues and pays tribute to LeBron James for his activism. The song's funky groove and powerful lyrics make it one of the standout tracks on the album.
"Chosen One" features Sonyae Elise and is a smooth, soulful track with a catchy hook and some impressive vocal work from both .Paak and Elise. The song's lyrics touch on themes of love and commitment, and the production is lush and polished.
"Jet Black" features Brandy and is a funky, uptempo track with a catchy hook and some impressive vocal work from both .Paak and Brandy. The song's infectious groove and playful lyrics make it a standout on the album.
"Twilight" is a smooth, mid-tempo track with a catchy hook and some impressive vocal work from .Paak. The song's lyrics touch on themes of love and longing, and the production is top-notch, with a tight rhythm section and some tasteful guitar work.
The album closes with "What Can We Do?" featuring the late Nate Dogg. The song is a soulful ballad with a nostalgic feel, and Nate Dogg's posthumous vocals add a poignant touch. The song's lush string arrangements and gentle guitar work make it a fitting end to the album.
Overall, "Ventura" is a masterful blend of soul, funk, R&B, and hip-hop, showcasing Anderson .Paak's versatility as an artist. The album's lush production, impressive guest features, and heartfelt lyrics make it a standout release in .Paak's discography. Fans of classic soul and modern R&B will find much to love on "Ventura."
