Description
Plague Vendor's third studio album, "By Night," is a captivating and energetic release that showcases the band's evolution and growth. With their unique blend of punk, post-punk, and garage rock, Plague Vendor delivers a raw and intense experience that is both exhilarating and thought-provoking.
From the very first track, "New Comedown," it becomes evident that Plague Vendor has refined their sound and honed their songwriting skills. The song bursts with frenetic energy, driven by thunderous drums, gritty guitar riffs, and Brandon Blaine's distinctive vocals. Blaine's voice is a standout feature throughout the album, as he effortlessly transitions between haunting whispers and explosive screams, adding depth and intensity to the band's sound.
One of the album's highlights is the infectious single, "Let Me Get High\Low." The track is a perfect example of Plague Vendor's ability to create catchy hooks while maintaining their raw and edgy sound. The song's driving rhythm and infectious chorus make it an instant earworm that will have listeners singing along in no time.
"By Night" also showcases the band's willingness to experiment with different musical styles. Tracks like "Prism" and "Night Sweats" incorporate elements of post-punk and new wave, adding a darker and more atmospheric tone to the album. These songs demonstrate Plague Vendor's versatility and their ability to push boundaries within their genre.
Lyrically, "By Night" explores themes of self-reflection, personal struggles, and the human condition. The album delves into the complexities of relationships, both internal and external, and offers a glimpse into the band members' own experiences and emotions. The lyrics are introspective and poetic, often delivered with a sense of urgency and vulnerability that resonates with the listener.
The production on "By Night" is top-notch, with John Congleton (known for his work with St. Vincent and Angel Olsen) at the helm. The album's sound is crisp and dynamic, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining the raw energy that defines Plague Vendor's live performances. The production perfectly captures the band's intensity and adds an extra layer of depth to their music.
While "By Night" is undoubtedly a strong album, it does have a few moments where the energy and excitement wane slightly. Tracks like "Pain In My Heart" and "White Wall" feel slightly less memorable compared to the rest of the album, lacking the same level of impact and catchiness. However, these moments are few and far between, and the overall quality of the album remains consistently high.
In conclusion, Plague Vendor's "By Night" is a powerful and captivating album that showcases the band's growth and maturity. With their unique blend of punk, post-punk, and garage rock, Plague Vendor delivers an intense and raw experience that will leave listeners craving more. From the infectious hooks to the introspective lyrics, "By Night" is a testament to the band's talent and creativity. With this album, Plague Vendor solidifies their place as one of the most exciting and innovative bands in the alternative rock scene.
