Description
Midnight, the Cleveland-based blackened speed metal band, has been making waves in the underground metal scene since their formation in 2003. With their raw and aggressive sound, they have gained a dedicated following of fans who appreciate their unapologetic approach to music. "Complete And Total Hell" is their second compilation album, released in 2012, which showcases their earlier works and serves as a perfect introduction to their unique brand of metal.
Clocking in at just over an hour, "Complete And Total Hell" is a relentless onslaught of fast-paced, high-energy tracks that will leave listeners breathless. The album features a collection of songs from Midnight's early EPs, demos, and splits, providing a comprehensive overview of their discography up until that point. It's worth noting that the production quality varies throughout the album, reflecting the band's DIY ethos and adding to the raw and gritty atmosphere.
From the opening track, "Black Rock'n'Roll," it becomes immediately apparent that Midnight is not here to play by the rules. The song sets the tone for the rest of the album, with its blistering guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and the distinctive raspy vocals of Athenar, the band's sole member. The lyrics, often dealing with themes of Satanism, sex, and rock 'n' roll rebellion, perfectly complement the aggressive and chaotic nature of the music.
One of the standout tracks on "Complete And Total Hell" is "Endless Slut." This song perfectly encapsulates Midnight's signature sound, with its catchy guitar hooks and infectious chorus. It's a prime example of their ability to create memorable and headbanging-worthy tunes while maintaining their raw and unpolished edge. Another highlight is "Lust, Filth, and Sleaze," a track that showcases the band's punk influences with its fast tempo and aggressive attitude.
While the album primarily consists of high-octane, fast-paced tracks, Midnight also demonstrates their versatility with songs like "Evil Like a Knife" and "Unholy and Rotten." These tracks slow down the tempo slightly, allowing for a more sinister and atmospheric experience. The guitar solos, though not overly technical, are executed with precision and add an extra layer of intensity to the music.
One aspect that sets Midnight apart from other bands in the genre is their ability to infuse their music with a sense of fun and excitement. This is evident in tracks like "Satanic Royalty" and "Violence on Violence," which are undeniably catchy and will have listeners singing along and banging their heads in no time. Midnight's ability to balance aggression and melody is a testament to their songwriting skills.
While "Complete And Total Hell" is a compilation album, it flows seamlessly from start to finish, creating a cohesive listening experience. The tracklist is well-curated, showcasing the evolution of Midnight's sound over the years and providing a glimpse into their early days. It's a perfect introduction for newcomers to the band and a must-have for die-hard fans who want to revisit their earlier material.
In conclusion, "Complete And Total Hell" is a relentless and unapologetic display of Midnight's blackened speed metal sound. With its raw production, aggressive riffs, and memorable hooks, the album is a testament to the band's ability to create music that is both ferocious and fun. Whether you're a fan of black metal, speed metal, or simply enjoy headbanging to intense music, Midnight's "Complete And Total Hell" is an album that should not be missed.
