Description

C.W. Stoneking's album "King Hokum" is a mesmerizing journey into the world of vintage blues and roots music. Released in 2005, this album showcases Stoneking's exceptional talent as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, while paying homage to the early 20th-century American music that inspired him.

From the very first track, "Don't Go Dancin' Down the Darktown Strutters' Ball," it becomes evident that Stoneking is a master of his craft. His deep, resonant voice transports listeners to a bygone era, evoking the spirit of blues legends like Robert Johnson and Lead Belly. The song's infectious rhythm and lively instrumentation set the tone for the rest of the album.

"King Hokum" is a collection of original compositions that seamlessly blend elements of blues, ragtime, and jazz. Stoneking's songwriting is both clever and poetic, with lyrics that tell stories of love, loss, and the struggles of everyday life. Tracks like "Handyman Blues" and "The Love Me or Die" showcase his ability to craft catchy melodies while maintaining a raw and authentic sound.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Dodo Blues," a hauntingly beautiful song that showcases Stoneking's fingerpicking guitar style. The intricate guitar work, combined with his soulful vocals, creates a mesmerizing atmosphere that transports listeners to a smoky blues club in the 1920s. It's a testament to Stoneking's talent as a musician and his deep understanding of the blues tradition.

Another highlight of "King Hokum" is the track "Jungle Lullaby." This song takes a departure from the traditional blues sound and incorporates elements of calypso and Caribbean music. Stoneking's ability to seamlessly blend different musical styles is a testament to his versatility as an artist. The infectious rhythm and playful lyrics make this track a standout on the album.

Throughout "King Hokum," Stoneking is accompanied by a talented group of musicians who bring his songs to life. The tight-knit ensemble includes a variety of instruments such as banjo, trumpet, and clarinet, adding depth and texture to the overall sound. The musicianship on display is exceptional, with each player bringing their own unique style to the table.

One of the album's strengths is its production, which captures the warmth and authenticity of the vintage blues recordings that inspired Stoneking. The use of vintage recording techniques and equipment gives the album an intimate and nostalgic feel. It's as if you're listening to a lost recording from the early 20th century, rather than a modern-day release.

In conclusion, C.W. Stoneking's "King Hokum" is a remarkable album that pays homage to the rich tradition of blues and roots music. Stoneking's exceptional talent as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist shines through on every track. With its infectious rhythms, clever songwriting, and authentic production, "King Hokum" is a must-listen for fans of vintage blues and anyone looking for a musical journey back in time.
