Description

"The Stone Roses' "Turns Into Stone," released in 1992, is a compilation album that gathers together non-album singles and B-sides recorded by the band between 1987 and 1991. While not a studio album in the traditional sense, "Turns Into Stone" serves as a showcase of The Stone Roses' versatility and their significant contribution to the Madchester scene and the broader indie rock movement of the late '80s and early '90s. The compilation features some of the band's most beloved tracks, highlighting their blend of jangly guitar pop, dance rhythms, and psychedelic influences.

"One Love," one of the compilation's standout tracks, encapsulates the band's ability to merge catchy melodies with a danceable groove, a hallmark of the Madchester sound. The song's infectious rhythm and Ian Brown's distinctive vocals make it a memorable addition to The Stone Roses' catalog.

"Fools Gold," arguably one of The Stone Roses' most iconic tracks, is also included on "Turns Into Stone." Known for its sinuous bassline, funk-infused percussion, and John Squire's swirling guitar work, "Fools Gold" represents the band's successful fusion of rock and dance music, becoming an anthem of the era.

"Elephant Stone," the compilation's opener, is another highlight, featuring the band's signature melodic guitar lines and Brown's evocative lyrics. The track's bright, uplifting sound contrasts with its more introspective lyrical themes, showcasing The Stone Roses' knack for combining pop sensibilities with depth and complexity.

"Where Angels Play" offers a more ethereal and atmospheric side of the band's music, with its shimmering guitar textures and Brown's dreamy vocal delivery. The track's expansive sound and psychedelic overtones demonstrate The Stone Roses' ability to create immersive and transportive music.

The production on "Turns Into Stone," overseen by various producers including John Leckie, Peter Hook, and The Stone Roses themselves, captures the band's dynamic range and the vibrancy of their sound. The compilation's mix emphasizes the band's innovative guitar work, rhythmic interplay, and memorable melodies, making it an essential collection for fans and newcomers alike.

In conclusion, "Turns Into Stone" is a valuable addition to The Stone Roses' discography, offering insight into the band's evolution and the breadth of their musical influences. The compilation not only gathers some of their most important non-album tracks but also serves as a testament to The Stone Roses' enduring impact on indie rock and the wider musical landscape of their time.
