Description

"The Amazing Nina Simone" is the second studio album by the legendary American singer, songwriter, and pianist Nina Simone. Released in 1959 by Colpix Records, this album showcases Simone's extraordinary versatility and depth as an artist, blending jazz, blues, gospel, and classical influences into a cohesive and compelling collection of songs.

One of the standout features of "The Amazing Nina Simone" is its eclectic mix of genres. Simone's classical training is evident throughout the album, particularly in her piano playing, which is both technically proficient and emotionally expressive. Her ability to seamlessly transition between different musical styles is a testament to her immense talent and broad musical knowledge.

The album opens with "Blue Prelude," a melancholic jazz number that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Simone's deep, rich voice conveys a sense of longing and introspection, drawing the listener in from the very first note. This track is followed by "Children Go Where I Send You," a lively gospel tune that showcases Simone's ability to infuse her music with a sense of spiritual fervor and joy.

One of the most notable tracks on the album is "Stompin' at the Savoy," a jazz standard that Simone interprets with a unique blend of sophistication and playfulness. Her piano work on this track is particularly impressive, demonstrating her technical skill and her ability to imbue each note with emotion and nuance.

Another highlight of the album is "It Might as Well Be Spring," a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic from the musical "State Fair." Simone's rendition of this song is both tender and powerful, with her voice conveying a deep sense of yearning and wistfulness. Her interpretation of the song is a perfect example of her ability to take a well-known standard and make it entirely her own.

"Summertime," one of the most covered songs in the jazz repertoire, is another standout track on the album. Simone's version of this Gershwin classic is hauntingly beautiful, with her voice and piano creating a sense of melancholy and longing that is both deeply moving and utterly captivating.

The album also features "You've Been Gone Too Long," a bluesy number that allows Simone to showcase her ability to convey deep emotion through her voice. Her performance on this track is raw and powerful, with each note dripping with a sense of heartache and longing.

"Plain Gold Ring" is another highlight, a song that tells the story of unrequited love with a sense of poignancy and depth that is truly remarkable. Simone's voice on this track is both powerful and vulnerable, capturing the complex emotions of the song's narrative with stunning clarity.

The album closes with "That's Him Over There," a playful and upbeat tune that provides a perfect contrast to some of the more melancholic tracks on the record. Simone's performance on this track is full of energy and charm, leaving the listener with a sense of joy and satisfaction.

Overall, "The Amazing Nina Simone" is a testament to Nina Simone's incredible talent and versatility as an artist. Each track on the album showcases a different facet of her musical genius, from her technical prowess on the piano to her ability to convey deep emotion through her voice. The album is a masterful blend of jazz, blues, gospel, and classical influences, and it remains a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners to this day.
