Description
"The Avalanches - Wildflower" is the second studio album by the Australian electronic music group The Avalanches, released on July 1, 2016, by Modular Recordings, Astralwerks, XL Recordings, and EMI. This album came 16 years after their critically acclaimed debut album, "Since I Left You," which set high expectations for their follow-up.
"Wildflower" is a vibrant, eclectic mix of genres, showcasing The Avalanches' signature style of dense sampling and intricate production. The album features a wide array of samples from various genres, including psychedelic rock, hip-hop, and pop, creating a nostalgic yet fresh soundscape. The Avalanches, consisting of Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, meticulously crafted the album over several years, resulting in a rich, layered auditory experience.
The album opens with "The Leaves Were Falling," a brief, atmospheric introduction that sets the tone for the journey ahead. This seamlessly transitions into "Because I'm Me," a standout track featuring the vocals of Camp Lo's Sonny Cheeba. The song is built around a sample of "Want Ads" by Honey Cone, creating an infectious, upbeat vibe that immediately draws the listener in.
"Frankie Sinatra," one of the album's lead singles, features guest appearances from Danny Brown and MF DOOM. The track is a quirky, carnival-esque number that samples "Bobby Sox Idol" by Wilmoth Houdini and "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music. The collaboration between Brown and DOOM adds a dynamic, unpredictable element to the song, making it one of the album's most memorable moments.
"Subways" is another highlight, featuring samples from Chandra's "Subways" and Graham Bonnet's "Warm Ride." The track's pulsating rhythm and catchy melody make it a perfect summer anthem. "If I Was a Folkstar," featuring Toro y Moi, is a dreamy, laid-back track that showcases The Avalanches' ability to blend different genres seamlessly.
The album also features several interludes and shorter tracks that contribute to its cohesive, mixtape-like feel. "Colours," featuring Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue, is a psychedelic, whimsical track that adds to the album's diverse sound palette. "Zap!" is a brief, energetic interlude that keeps the momentum going.
"Wildflower" also includes more introspective moments, such as "Harmony," which features vocals from Jonti and samples from The Free Design's "Kites Are Fun." The track's soothing melody and reflective lyrics provide a nice contrast to the more upbeat songs on the album. "Stepkids," featuring Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux, is another contemplative track that adds depth to the album.
The album closes with "Saturday Night Inside Out," featuring Father John Misty and David Berman. The track is a fitting conclusion to the album, with its reflective lyrics and lush instrumentation. The combination of Misty's and Berman's vocals creates a hauntingly beautiful finale.
"Wildflower" received widespread critical acclaim upon its release, with many praising its ambitious scope and intricate production. The album was noted for its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia while still sounding contemporary. It was included in several year-end lists and was nominated for various awards, further cementing The Avalanches' reputation as innovative and influential artists.
In conclusion, "Wildflower" is a triumphant return for The Avalanches, showcasing their unique ability to blend diverse genres and samples into a cohesive, captivating whole. The album's rich, layered production and eclectic mix of sounds make it a standout release in the electronic music landscape. Fans of their debut album will find much to love in "Wildflower," while new listeners will be drawn in by its infectious energy and creativity.
