Description
"The Presets - Apocalypso" Album Review
Released on April 12, 2008, "Apocalypso" is the second studio album by Australian electronic music duo The Presets. Comprised of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes, The Presets have been known for their energetic and innovative approach to electronic music, and "Apocalypso" is no exception. The album was released under the Modular Recordings label and has been widely acclaimed for its bold, danceable tracks and its significant impact on the electronic music scene.
"Apocalypso" opens with the track "Kicking and Screaming," which sets the tone for the album with its pulsating beats and Hamilton's distinctive vocals. The song's driving rhythm and infectious energy make it a perfect introduction to the album's overall vibe. This is followed by "My People," one of the standout tracks on the album. "My People" became a massive hit, reaching number 14 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and becoming an anthem for many. Its repetitive, chant-like chorus and relentless beat make it a quintessential dance track.
The album continues with "A New Sky," which showcases The Presets' ability to blend melodic elements with their signature electronic sound. The track features a more subdued tempo compared to the previous songs but maintains the album's cohesive energy. "This Boy's in Love" is another highlight, with its emotive lyrics and catchy hooks. The song's blend of electronic and pop elements demonstrates the duo's versatility and ability to craft memorable tunes.
"If I Know You" is a departure from the high-energy tracks, offering a more introspective and melodic experience. The song's lush production and heartfelt lyrics provide a moment of reflection amidst the album's otherwise upbeat nature. "Together" brings back the dancefloor energy with its driving beat and anthemic chorus, making it a favorite for live performances.
"Apocalypso" also features "Talk Like That," a track that combines aggressive beats with catchy vocal lines, creating a sense of urgency and excitement. "Eucalyptus" is another standout, with its complex rhythms and layered production. The song's intricate arrangement showcases The Presets' skill in creating dynamic and engaging electronic music.
The album's title track, "Apocalypso," is an instrumental piece that serves as a bridge between the more vocal-heavy songs. Its atmospheric soundscapes and intricate production provide a moment of respite before the album's final tracks. "Yippiyo-Ay" is a playful and energetic song that brings a sense of fun to the album, while "Anywhere" closes the album on a high note with its uplifting melody and infectious rhythm.
"Apocalypso" was both a critical and commercial success. It won the ARIA Award for Album of the Year in 2008 and was also awarded Best Dance Release and Best Group. The album's success helped to solidify The Presets' reputation as one of the leading acts in the electronic music scene. It also played a significant role in bringing Australian electronic music to a global audience.
In conclusion, "Apocalypso" is a landmark album that showcases The Presets' talent for creating innovative and engaging electronic music. Its blend of high-energy dance tracks and more introspective moments provides a well-rounded listening experience. The album's critical and commercial success is a testament to its quality and the duo's ability to connect with audiences. "Apocalypso" remains a significant release in the electronic music genre and continues to be celebrated for its impact and influence.
