"I'm With Her" is a folk supergroup consisting of three highly acclaimed musicians: Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan. Their debut album, "See You Around," was released on February 16, 2018, under the Rounder Records label. This album showcases the trio's exceptional musicianship, intricate harmonies, and songwriting prowess, making it a standout in the contemporary folk and Americana genres.
The album opens with the title track, "See You Around," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. The song features delicate acoustic instrumentation and the trio's signature harmonies, creating a warm and inviting sound. The lyrics speak to themes of departure and longing, a recurring motif throughout the album.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Game to Lose," which highlights the group's ability to blend traditional folk elements with modern sensibilities. The song's intricate arrangement and dynamic vocal interplay make it a compelling listen. Another notable track is "Overland," a poignant ballad that showcases the trio's storytelling abilities. The song's lyrics paint a vivid picture of a journey through the American landscape, and the harmonies add an emotional depth to the narrative.
"See You Around" also features the song "Ain't That Fine," which has a more upbeat and playful feel compared to some of the other tracks. The song's catchy melody and lively instrumentation make it a refreshing change of pace on the album. "Pangaea" is another highlight, with its hauntingly beautiful harmonies and introspective lyrics. The song explores themes of separation and connection, both in a personal and a broader sense.
The production on "See You Around" is understated yet effective, allowing the trio's vocals and acoustic instruments to shine. The album was produced by Ethan Johns, known for his work with artists like Ryan Adams and Laura Marling. Johns' production style complements the group's sound, creating a cohesive and polished record.
Throughout the album, the musicianship of Watkins, Jarosz, and O'Donovan is on full display. Each member brings their unique strengths to the table, resulting in a rich and diverse sonic palette. Watkins' fiddle playing, Jarosz's mandolin and banjo skills, and O'Donovan's guitar work all contribute to the album's intricate arrangements.
Lyrically, "See You Around" delves into themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. The trio's songwriting is both introspective and relatable, with each song offering a glimpse into their personal experiences and emotions. The album's closing track, "Hundred Miles," is a fitting end to the journey, with its reflective lyrics and soothing harmonies.
In conclusion, "See You Around" is a masterful debut from I'm With Her, showcasing the trio's exceptional talents and chemistry. The album's blend of traditional and contemporary folk elements, combined with its heartfelt lyrics and impeccable harmonies, make it a must-listen for fans of the genre.
