Description
"Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979" is a live album by the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Released in 2001, the album captures performances from his 1979 tour, specifically from concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on December 4 and 5, 1979. This album offers a unique glimpse into Cohen's live performances during a pivotal period in his career.
The album features a selection of songs that span Cohen's career up to that point, showcasing his poetic lyricism and deep, resonant voice. The setlist includes classics such as "Bird on the Wire," "So Long, Marianne," and "Suzanne," as well as lesser-known tracks like "The Smokey Life" and "The Gypsy's Wife." Each song is delivered with the emotional intensity and introspective depth that Cohen is known for, making the album a compelling listen for both longtime fans and newcomers to his music.
One of the standout aspects of "Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979" is the quality of the live recordings. The production captures the intimacy and rawness of Cohen's performances, allowing listeners to feel as though they are in the audience. The arrangements are rich and textured, featuring contributions from a talented group of musicians, including Roscoe Beck on bass, Sharon Robinson on backing vocals, and Raffi Hakopian on violin. These musicians add layers of complexity to Cohen's songs, enhancing their emotional impact.
Cohen's stage presence is another highlight of the album. His interactions with the audience are warm and engaging, and his introductions to the songs provide insight into his creative process and the themes that inspire his work. For example, before performing "The Stranger Song," Cohen shares a story about the song's origins, adding a personal touch that deepens the listener's connection to the music.
The album also includes a few rare live performances that are not often found on other live recordings. "Memories," a track from Cohen's 1977 album "Death of a Ladies' Man," is given a powerful rendition, with Cohen's voice soaring over the lush instrumentation. Another rare gem is "The Window," a hauntingly beautiful song from his 1979 album "Recent Songs," which is performed with a delicate and nuanced touch.

The album captures a moment in time when Cohen was at the height of his powers as a live performer, and it serves as a reminder of his unique talent and the timeless quality of his music.
In conclusion, "Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979" is an essential addition to the discography of Leonard Cohen.
