"Bicep - Isles" Album Review
Bicep, the Belfast-born, London-based electronic music duo consisting of Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar, released their sophomore album "Isles" on January 22, 2021, through the renowned label Ninja Tune. Following their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2017, "Isles" was highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, eager to see how the duo would evolve their sound.
"Isles" is a testament to Bicep's ability to blend various electronic music styles, creating a cohesive and immersive listening experience. The album features ten tracks, each showcasing the duo's knack for intricate production and emotive melodies. The album's title, "Isles," reflects the duo's exploration of their Irish heritage and the diverse influences that have shaped their musical journey.
The opening track, "Atlas," sets the tone for the album with its pulsating beats and ethereal vocal samples. The track builds gradually, layering intricate rhythms and melodies that create a sense of anticipation and excitement. "Atlas" was released as the lead single from the album and received widespread acclaim for its hypnotic and uplifting qualities.
"Apricots," another standout track, features a sample from the traditional Malawian song "Ndirande" by the group Abangqobi. The track's haunting vocal loop and driving bassline create a mesmerizing atmosphere that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. "Apricots" exemplifies Bicep's ability to seamlessly blend different cultural influences into their music, resulting in a unique and captivating sound.
"Saku," featuring vocalist Clara La San, is a more upbeat and dancefloor-oriented track. La San's ethereal vocals float over a backdrop of crisp percussion and shimmering synths, creating a track that is both infectious and emotionally resonant. The collaboration with Clara La San adds a new dimension to Bicep's sound, showcasing their versatility as producers.
The album's midpoint, "Lido," is a more introspective and ambient piece. The track's lush pads and delicate melodies create a sense of tranquility and reflection, providing a moment of respite amidst the more energetic tracks on the album. "Lido" highlights Bicep's ability to create emotive and atmospheric soundscapes, adding depth and variety to the album.
"Isles" also features the track "Rever," which includes a sample from the Bulgarian choir 100 Kaba-Gaidi. The track's haunting vocal harmonies and driving rhythm create a sense of urgency and intensity, making it one of the album's most powerful moments. "Rever" is a prime example of Bicep's skill in incorporating diverse musical elements into their work, resulting in a rich and multifaceted sound.
The album closes with "Hawk," a track that combines intricate percussion with lush, evolving melodies. The track's gradual build and release create a sense of closure and resolution, bringing the album to a satisfying conclusion. "Hawk" encapsulates the themes and emotions explored throughout "Isles," leaving the listener with a lasting impression of Bicep's artistry.
Overall, "Isles" is a masterful follow-up to Bicep's debut album, showcasing their growth and evolution as artists. The album's blend of diverse influences, intricate production, and emotive melodies make it a standout release in the electronic music landscape. Bicep's ability to create a cohesive and immersive listening experience is evident throughout "Isles," solidifying their reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting acts in contemporary electronic music.
