Description

BadBadNotGood's third studio album, "III," released on May 6, 2014, marks a significant evolution in the Canadian instrumental group's sound. Known for their unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, BadBadNotGood (BBNG) consists of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alexander Sowinski on drums. This album, unlike their previous works, is entirely instrumental and showcases the trio's growth as musicians and composers.

"III" opens with "Triangle," a track that immediately sets the tone for the album with its intricate rhythms and dynamic shifts. The song features a blend of jazz improvisation and structured composition, highlighting the band's ability to seamlessly merge different musical styles. The use of electronic elements adds a modern twist to the traditional jazz trio format, creating a sound that is both fresh and familiar.

The second track, "Can't Leave the Night," is a standout on the album. It begins with a haunting piano melody that gradually builds into a powerful, driving rhythm. The interplay between the bass and drums is particularly impressive, showcasing Hansen and Sowinski's tight rhythmic connection. The song's structure is complex, with multiple sections that flow seamlessly into one another, demonstrating the band's compositional prowess.

"Confessions," featuring saxophonist Leland Whitty, is another highlight. Whitty's saxophone adds a new dimension to the band's sound, blending perfectly with Tavares' lush keyboard textures and the rhythm section's groove. The track's moody atmosphere and intricate arrangements make it one of the most memorable pieces on the album.

Throughout "III," BadBadNotGood demonstrates their ability to create a wide range of moods and textures. "Kaleidoscope" is a perfect example of this, with its dreamy, ethereal soundscapes and intricate rhythms. The track's title is fitting, as the music constantly shifts and changes, much like the patterns in a kaleidoscope. The band's use of dynamics is particularly effective here, with quiet, introspective passages giving way to powerful, full-band crescendos.

"Eyes Closed" is another track that showcases the band's versatility. The song's laid-back groove and soulful melodies are reminiscent of classic jazz, but the band's modern sensibilities are evident in the electronic flourishes and unconventional song structure. The result is a track that feels both timeless and contemporary.

The album closes with "CS60," a sprawling, epic piece that encapsulates everything that makes BadBadNotGood unique. The track's length allows the band to fully explore their musical ideas, with each member taking turns to shine. Tavares' keyboard work is particularly impressive, with lush chords and intricate melodies weaving in and out of the mix. The rhythm section is equally strong, with Hansen and Sowinski providing a solid foundation for the band's explorations.

"III" is a testament to BadBadNotGood's growth as a band. Their ability to blend different musical styles and create complex, engaging compositions sets them apart from their peers. The album's production is also worth noting, with a warm, organic sound that perfectly complements the band's music. Each instrument is given space to breathe, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the intricacies of the performances.

In conclusion, "III" is a remarkable album that showcases BadBadNotGood's unique sound and impressive musicianship. The band's ability to blend jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music into a cohesive whole is truly impressive, and the album's intricate compositions and dynamic performances make it a standout in their discography. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the band, "III" is an album that is well worth your time.
