Description

"Funkadelic - Toys" is a compilation album by the legendary American funk band Funkadelic, released on August 17, 2008, by Westbound Records. This album is a treasure trove for fans and collectors, as it features previously unreleased tracks and alternate versions of songs recorded during the band's early years in the 1970s. The compilation provides a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of one of the most innovative and influential bands in the history of funk music.

Funkadelic, led by the visionary George Clinton, was known for its eclectic blend of funk, rock, and psychedelic music. The band's lineup during the period these tracks were recorded included notable musicians such as Eddie Hazel on guitar, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, and Bootsy Collins on bass. These artists, along with Clinton's imaginative direction, helped to define the sound of Funkadelic and left an indelible mark on the music industry.

"Toys" opens with the track "Heart Trouble aka You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure," a song that showcases the band's signature blend of funk and rock. The track features a driving rhythm section, infectious guitar riffs, and soulful vocals, setting the tone for the rest of the album. This song, like many others on the compilation, highlights the raw energy and experimental spirit that characterized Funkadelic's early work.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg," an extended jam that allows the band members to showcase their individual talents. Eddie Hazel's guitar work is particularly noteworthy, as he delivers a series of blistering solos that demonstrate why he is considered one of the greatest guitarists of his generation. The track also features intricate keyboard work by Bernie Worrell, whose contributions to Funkadelic's sound cannot be overstated.

Another highlight is "Vampy Funky Bernie (3rd Tune Olympic)," an instrumental track that puts Worrell's keyboard skills front and center. The song's funky groove and complex arrangements are a testament to Worrell's musical genius and his ability to push the boundaries of what was possible within the funk genre. This track, along with others on the album, provides a deeper understanding of the band's creative process and the individual contributions of its members.

"Toys" also includes alternate versions of well-known Funkadelic songs, such as "Wars of Armageddon" and "Cosmic Slop." These versions offer a fresh perspective on the band's classic material and allow listeners to appreciate the evolution of these songs over time. The alternate take of "Cosmic Slop," for example, features different vocal arrangements and instrumental sections, giving fans a new way to experience this iconic track.

The album's production quality is impressive, considering the age of the recordings. The tracks have been carefully remastered to preserve their original sound while enhancing their clarity and depth. This attention to detail ensures that "Toys" is not only a valuable historical document but also a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.

In conclusion, "Funkadelic - Toys" is a must-have for any fan of the band or the funk genre in general. The album offers a unique glimpse into the early years of Funkadelic, showcasing the raw talent and innovative spirit that made them one of the most influential bands of their time. With its mix of unreleased tracks, alternate versions, and extended jams, "Toys" is a testament to the enduring legacy of George Clinton and his musical collaborators. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to Funkadelic's music, this compilation is sure to provide hours of enjoyment and insight into the band's groundbreaking work.
