Description

Macy Gray's tenth studio album, "Ruby," released on September 21, 2018, is a testament to her enduring talent and unique voice in the music industry. Known for her distinctive raspy voice and eclectic style, Gray delivers a collection of songs that blend soul, jazz, and R&B, showcasing her versatility and artistic growth.

"Ruby" opens with the track "Buddha," a song that immediately sets the tone for the album with its funky bassline and Gray's signature vocal delivery. The lyrics, which touch on themes of self-awareness and enlightenment, are both introspective and empowering. This track is a strong start, drawing listeners into Gray's world with its infectious groove.

The second track, "Cold World," continues the album's exploration of personal and social themes. With its smooth, jazzy instrumentation and poignant lyrics, Gray addresses the harsh realities of life while maintaining a sense of hope and resilience. The song's arrangement, featuring lush strings and a steady rhythm, complements Gray's emotive vocals perfectly.

One of the standout tracks on "Ruby" is "Sugar Daddy," a playful and sultry tune that showcases Gray's ability to blend humor with sensuality. The song's catchy chorus and upbeat tempo make it an instant favorite, and it's no surprise that it was chosen as the lead single for the album. The accompanying music video, directed by Christian Lamb, further highlights Gray's charismatic performance style.

"Ruby" also features collaborations with several notable artists, adding depth and variety to the album. "Over You," a duet with guitarist Gary Clark Jr., is a soulful ballad that highlights the chemistry between the two musicians. Clark's bluesy guitar riffs complement Gray's heartfelt vocals, creating a powerful and memorable track.

Another collaboration, "White Man," features rapper and producer Aloe Blacc. This song addresses issues of racial inequality and social justice, with Blacc's verses providing a sharp contrast to Gray's soulful chorus. The track's message is both timely and timeless, reflecting Gray's commitment to using her music as a platform for change.

Throughout "Ruby," Gray's songwriting shines, with each track offering a unique perspective and emotional depth. "Jealousy" is a haunting ballad that delves into the complexities of envy and desire, while "Witness" is an uplifting anthem about finding strength in the face of adversity. The album's closing track, "One," is a beautiful and introspective song that leaves listeners with a sense of hope and unity.

The production on "Ruby" is top-notch, with a rich and polished sound that enhances Gray's vocal performance. The album was produced by a team of talented musicians and producers, including Tommy Parker, Thomas Lumpkins, and Johan Carlsson, who have worked with artists such as Ariana Grande and John Legend. Their expertise is evident in the album's cohesive and dynamic sound.

In conclusion, "Ruby" is a compelling and well-crafted album that showcases Macy Gray's unique voice and artistic vision. With its blend of soulful melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and top-notch production, the album is a testament to Gray's enduring talent and relevance in the music industry. Fans of Gray's previous work will find much to love in "Ruby," while new listeners will be drawn in by her distinctive style and powerful storytelling.
