Description
"Make the Road by Walking" is the debut album by the Menahan Street Band, released on October 14, 2008, by Dunham Records, a subsidiary of Daptone Records. The album is a rich tapestry of instrumental soul, funk, and jazz, showcasing the band's tight musicianship and deep understanding of groove and melody.
The Menahan Street Band was formed by Thomas Brenneck, a guitarist and producer who has worked with various artists in the Daptone Records family, including Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley. The band also features members from other notable groups such as Antibalas, The Budos Band, and El Michels Affair, creating a supergroup of sorts within the modern soul and funk revival scene.
"Make the Road by Walking" opens with the title track, which sets the tone for the album with its lush horn arrangements, steady rhythm section, and evocative melodies. This track gained additional fame when it was sampled by Jay-Z for his song "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is...)" from his 2007 album "American Gangster," even before the Menahan Street Band's album was officially released. The sample brought significant attention to the band and highlighted their ability to create music that resonates across genres.
The album continues with "Tired of Fighting," a track that features a melancholic yet uplifting horn section, underpinned by a solid groove that is both reflective and forward-moving. The band's ability to convey emotion without lyrics is a testament to their skill as instrumentalists and arrangers.
"Home Again!" is another standout track, characterized by its upbeat tempo and infectious melody. The interplay between the horns and the rhythm section is particularly notable, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience. The song's structure allows each instrument to shine, showcasing the individual talents of the band members while maintaining a cohesive sound.
"Montego Sunset" brings a slightly different flavor to the album, with its laid-back, almost tropical vibe. The track's smooth guitar lines and gentle percussion create a relaxing atmosphere, transporting the listener to a serene, sun-soaked locale. This diversity in sound demonstrates the band's versatility and willingness to explore different musical landscapes.
"Karina" is a beautiful, slow-burning track that highlights the band's ability to create deep, soulful grooves. The song's haunting melody and rich harmonies evoke a sense of longing and introspection, making it one of the more emotionally resonant pieces on the album.
"The Traitor" picks up the pace with its driving rhythm and bold horn lines. The track's energy is infectious, and the band's tight performance keeps the listener engaged from start to finish. The song's arrangement is complex yet accessible, showcasing the band's ability to craft intricate compositions that remain grounded in a strong sense of groove.
"Make the Road by Walking" closes with "Going the Distance," a fitting end to the album that encapsulates the band's journey and growth. The track's triumphant horns and steady rhythm create a sense of resolution and accomplishment, leaving the listener with a feeling of satisfaction and anticipation for what the band will do next.
Overall, "Make the Road by Walking" is a masterful debut that firmly establishes the Menahan Street Band as a force to be reckoned with in the world of instrumental soul and funk. The album's blend of tight musicianship, emotive melodies, and diverse influences makes it a standout release that continues to resonate with listeners. Whether you're a longtime fan of the genre or a newcomer, "Make the Road by Walking" is an album that deserves a place in your collection.
