Description
The Fearless Flyers, a dynamic offshoot of the funk band Vulfpeck, have once again delivered a masterclass in tight, groove-centric instrumental music with their third studio album, "The Fearless Flyers III." Released in 2021, this album continues to showcase the band's exceptional musicianship and their ability to create infectious, high-energy tracks that are both technically impressive and immensely enjoyable.
The Fearless Flyers consist of an all-star lineup: guitarist Cory Wong, bassist Joe Dart, drummer Nate Smith, and guitarist Mark Lettieri. Each member brings a unique flavor to the group, resulting in a cohesive yet diverse sound that is unmistakably their own. The album also features contributions from Vulfpeck's Jack Stratton, who plays a significant role in the band's production and creative direction.
"The Fearless Flyers III" opens with "Nate Smith Is the Ace of Aces," a track that immediately sets the tone for the album. Nate Smith's drumming is nothing short of phenomenal, providing a rock-solid foundation for the rest of the band to build upon. The interplay between Cory Wong's rhythmic guitar work and Joe Dart's punchy bass lines is a highlight, showcasing the tightness and precision that The Fearless Flyers are known for.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Kenni and the Jets," which features a guest appearance by saxophonist Kenni Holmen. Holmen's saxophone adds a new dimension to the band's sound, blending seamlessly with the core quartet's instrumentation. The track is a perfect example of The Fearless Flyers' ability to incorporate different musical elements while maintaining their signature groove.
Another notable track is "Simon F15," a high-energy tune that features blistering guitar work from Mark Lettieri. Lettieri's solos are both technically impressive and melodically engaging, demonstrating his prowess as a guitarist. The track also highlights the band's ability to create complex arrangements that are still accessible and enjoyable for listeners.
"Ambush" is a slower, more laid-back track that allows the band to explore a different side of their musicality. The groove is deep and infectious, with Joe Dart's bass taking center stage. Dart's playing is both tasteful and virtuosic, providing a masterclass in how to hold down a groove while still adding intricate and interesting lines.
The album closes with "The Speedwalker," a track that encapsulates everything that makes The Fearless Flyers great. The energy is high, the musicianship is top-notch, and the groove is undeniable. It's a fitting end to an album that is sure to be a favorite among fans of funk, jazz, and instrumental music.
In terms of production, "The Fearless Flyers III" is crisp and clean, allowing each instrument to shine. The mix is well-balanced, ensuring that no single element overpowers the others. This attention to detail in the production process is a testament to the band's commitment to delivering a high-quality listening experience.
Overall, "The Fearless Flyers III" is a fantastic addition to The Fearless Flyers' discography.
