Description

Nas - The Lost Tapes II

Nas, the legendary rapper from Queensbridge, New York, has long been celebrated for his intricate lyricism and storytelling prowess. His 2019 release, "The Lost Tapes II," is a compilation album that serves as a sequel to his 2002 project, "The Lost Tapes." This album features unreleased tracks from his previous studio sessions, spanning from 2006's "Hip Hop Is Dead" to 2018's "Nasir." The project is a treasure trove for fans, offering a glimpse into the vault of one of hip-hop's most revered artists.

The album opens with "No Bad Energy," a track produced by Swizz Beatz. The production is lush and soulful, setting the tone for the introspective journey that follows. Nas's lyrics reflect his resilience and wisdom, themes that are prevalent throughout the album. The track is a strong opener, showcasing Nas's ability to blend introspection with braggadocio seamlessly.

"Vernon Family" is another standout track, produced by Pharrell Williams. The song is a nostalgic ode to Nas's upbringing in the Queensbridge projects. The production is minimalistic, allowing Nas's vivid storytelling to take center stage. He paints a picture of his childhood, filled with both hardship and hope, making it a poignant addition to the album.

One of the most intriguing tracks on the album is "Lost Freestyle," produced by Statik Selektah. The beat is a throwback to the boom-bap era, and Nas's flow is impeccable. His lyrics touch on various topics, from his career longevity to the state of the world, showcasing his versatility as an artist.

"War Against Love," produced by DJ Dahi, is a politically charged track that addresses social issues such as systemic racism and police brutality. Nas's lyrics are sharp and thought-provoking, making it one of the most powerful songs on the album. The production is haunting, with a melancholic piano loop that complements the weighty subject matter.

"QueensBridge Politics" is a track that delves into the history and legacy of the Queensbridge projects. Produced by Pete Rock, the beat is soulful and nostalgic, perfectly matching Nas's reflective lyrics. He pays homage to the late Prodigy of Mobb Deep, a fellow Queensbridge native, and reflects on the impact of their neighborhood on hip-hop culture.

"Beautiful Life," featuring RaVaughn, is a more uplifting track that celebrates life's blessings. The production, handled by No I.D., is smooth and melodic, providing a perfect backdrop for Nas's positive message. RaVaughn's soulful hook adds an extra layer of warmth to the track, making it a feel-good moment on the album.

The album closes with "Highly Favored," produced by RZA. The track is a triumphant declaration of Nas's success and perseverance. The production is grand and cinematic, with orchestral elements that give it an epic feel. Nas's lyrics are confident and celebratory, ending the album on a high note.

Overall, "The Lost Tapes II" is a testament to Nas's enduring talent and relevance in the hip-hop world. The album is a cohesive collection of tracks that showcase his lyrical prowess and ability to tackle a wide range of topics. The production is top-notch, with contributions from some of the industry's best producers. For fans of Nas, this album is a must-listen, offering a deeper look into the mind of one of hip-hop's greatest artists.
