Description
"Neva Left" is the fifteenth studio album by the iconic American rapper Snoop Dogg, released on May 19, 2017, by Doggystyle Records and Empire Distribution. This album marks a significant return to Snoop Dogg's roots, both musically and thematically, as it revisits the classic West Coast sound that catapulted him to fame in the early 1990s.
The album cover itself is a nostalgic nod to Snoop Dogg's past, featuring a photograph of the rapper from 1992, taken by the legendary photographer Chi Modu. This image sets the tone for the album, which is steeped in the essence of Snoop's early career and the golden era of West Coast hip-hop.
"Neva Left" opens with the title track, which immediately establishes the album's theme of loyalty to one's origins. The song features a sample from The Charmels' "As Long As I've Got You," famously used by the Wu-Tang Clan in "C.R.E.A.M.," and Snoop's lyrics reflect on his journey and enduring presence in the rap game. This track, like many others on the album, showcases Snoop's smooth, laid-back flow and his ability to craft vivid narratives.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Moment I Feared," featuring Rick Rock. This song delves into the darker side of fame and the music industry, with Snoop reflecting on the pressures and pitfalls that come with success. The production is gritty and hard-hitting, complementing the introspective lyrics.
"Go On," featuring October London, is another highlight. This track has a soulful, feel-good vibe, with October London's smooth vocals providing a perfect counterpoint to Snoop's relaxed delivery. The song's production, with its lush instrumentation and catchy hook, makes it one of the more radio-friendly tracks on the album.
"Neva Left" also features a number of collaborations with other artists, showcasing Snoop Dogg's versatility and ability to adapt to different styles. "Big Mouth" features a guest appearance by Too $hort, and the two veteran rappers trade verses over a funky, bass-heavy beat. "Toss It," featuring Too $hort and Nef the Pharaoh, is another collaboration that stands out, with its infectious energy and playful lyrics.
One of the more introspective tracks on the album is "Love Around the World," featuring Big Bub. This song sees Snoop reflecting on his global influence and the love he receives from fans around the world. The production is smooth and soulful, with Big Bub's vocals adding an extra layer of emotion to the track.
"Neva Left" also includes a number of tracks that pay homage to Snoop's West Coast roots. "420 (Blaze Up)," featuring Devin the Dude, Wiz Khalifa, and DJ Battlecat, is a laid-back anthem celebrating marijuana culture, a recurring theme in Snoop's music. "Mount Kushmore," featuring Redman, Method Man, and B-Real, is another standout track that brings together some of the biggest names in hip-hop for a celebration of cannabis culture.
Overall, "Neva Left" is a strong addition to Snoop Dogg's extensive discography. The album successfully blends nostalgia with contemporary sounds, showcasing Snoop's ability to stay relevant while staying true to his roots. The production is consistently high-quality, with a mix of soulful, funky, and hard-hitting beats that complement Snoop's distinctive flow. The guest appearances are well-chosen and add variety to the album, while Snoop's lyrics reflect his maturity and experience in the rap game.
For fans of Snoop Dogg and West Coast hip-hop, "Neva Left" is a must-listen. It serves as a reminder of why Snoop Dogg remains one of the most enduring and influential figures in the genre, and it proves that even after more than two decades in the industry, he still has plenty to say.
