Description
The Roots' album "How I Got Over," released on June 22, 2010, stands as a testament to the band's enduring relevance and their ability to evolve within the hip-hop genre. This album, their ninth studio effort, showcases the Philadelphia-based group's signature blend of live instrumentation, thought-provoking lyrics, and a seamless fusion of various musical styles.
The album opens with "A Peace of Light," a short but powerful introduction featuring the harmonizing vocals of Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian, and Haley Dekle from the indie rock band Dirty Projectors. This sets the tone for an album that is both introspective and socially conscious. The Roots, led by drummer and producer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and rapper Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, delve into themes of struggle, resilience, and hope throughout the record.
One of the standout tracks is "Dear God 2.0," which reimagines the song "Dear God" by Monsters of Folk. The Roots' version features Jim James of My Morning Jacket, who also contributed to the original song. Black Thought's verses address issues such as economic disparity and social injustice, making it a poignant commentary on contemporary society. The haunting production, characterized by its minimalist beat and somber piano, complements the weighty subject matter.
"Radio Daze" is another highlight, featuring guest appearances from Blu, P.O.R.N., and Dice Raw. The track's nostalgic feel, with its soulful samples and reflective lyrics, captures the essence of the album's exploration of personal and collective history. The interplay between the guest artists and Black Thought adds depth and variety to the song, making it a memorable entry in the album's lineup.
The title track, "How I Got Over," is a triumphant anthem that encapsulates the album's overarching message of perseverance. The song features a catchy hook sung by Dice Raw and a driving beat that propels Black Thought's verses forward. The lyrics reflect on overcoming obstacles and finding strength in adversity, a theme that resonates throughout the album.
"Now or Never," featuring Phonte and Dice Raw, is another track that exemplifies The Roots' ability to blend introspection with infectious grooves. The song's introspective lyrics and smooth production create a contemplative atmosphere, while the guest verses add layers of meaning and perspective.
The album also includes "The Day," which features Blu, Phonte, and Patty Crash. This track stands out for its lush instrumentation and uplifting message. The collaboration between the artists results in a rich tapestry of sounds and ideas, making it a standout moment on the album.
"Right On," featuring Joanna Newsom and STS, is a unique fusion of hip-hop and folk elements. Newsom's ethereal vocals and harp playing provide an unexpected but effective contrast to Black Thought's gritty verses. This track exemplifies The Roots' willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of their genre.
Throughout "How I Got Over," The Roots maintain a cohesive sound that is both innovative and rooted in tradition. The album's production, handled primarily by Questlove and the band's longtime collaborator James Poyser, is polished and sophisticated, with a focus on live instrumentation and organic sounds.
In conclusion, "How I Got Over" is a masterful album that showcases The Roots' ability to blend introspective lyrics with innovative production. The band's willingness to tackle difficult subjects and experiment with different musical styles results in a record that is both thought-provoking and enjoyable. This album solidifies The Roots' status as one of the most important and enduring acts in hip-hop, and it remains a significant entry in their discography.
