Description
"Dexter Gordon - Go!" is a quintessential jazz album that stands as a testament to the brilliance of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon. Released in 1962 on the Blue Note label, this album is often hailed as one of Gordon's finest works and a classic in the hard bop genre. The album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Together, they create a cohesive and dynamic sound that showcases Gordon's virtuosity and the tight interplay between the quartet.
The album opens with "Cheese Cake," a Gordon original that immediately sets the tone with its catchy melody and swinging rhythm. Gordon's robust and warm tenor saxophone tone is on full display here, delivering a performance that is both technically proficient and emotionally engaging. Sonny Clark's piano solo is equally impressive, demonstrating his ability to complement Gordon's style while adding his own unique flair.
"I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" is a beautiful ballad that highlights Gordon's lyrical playing. His interpretation of the melody is both tender and expressive, capturing the melancholic essence of the song. The rhythm section provides a sensitive and supportive backdrop, allowing Gordon's saxophone to shine.
"Second Balcony Jump" is another standout track, featuring an upbeat tempo and a lively performance from the entire quartet. Gordon's improvisation is both inventive and fluid, showcasing his ability to navigate complex chord changes with ease. Billy Higgins' drumming is particularly noteworthy, providing a driving force that propels the track forward.
"Love for Sale" is a Cole Porter standard that receives a fresh and exciting treatment from Gordon and his bandmates. The arrangement is both sophisticated and accessible, with Gordon delivering a masterful performance that balances technical prowess with emotional depth. Butch Warren's bass playing is solid and supportive, anchoring the track with a steady groove.
The album closes with "Where Are You," a poignant ballad that serves as a fitting conclusion to the record. Gordon's playing is introspective and soulful, capturing the longing and introspection of the song. The rhythm section once again provides a sensitive and nuanced accompaniment, allowing Gordon's saxophone to take center stage.
One of the most remarkable aspects of "Go!" is the chemistry between the musicians. Each member of the quartet brings their own unique strengths to the table, resulting in a cohesive and dynamic sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. Sonny Clark's piano playing is both inventive and tasteful, providing a perfect complement to Gordon's saxophone. Butch Warren's bass playing is solid and supportive, anchoring the rhythm section with a steady groove. Billy Higgins' drumming is both energetic and nuanced, providing a driving force that propels the music forward.
The production quality of "Go!" is also noteworthy. The album was recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, whose engineering skills are widely regarded as some of the best in the business. The sound quality is crisp and clear, allowing each instrument to be heard with clarity and precision. The balance between the instruments is also excellent, ensuring that no single element overpowers the others.
In conclusion, "Dexter Gordon - Go!" is a timeless jazz album that showcases the talents of one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of all time. The combination of Gordon's virtuosic playing, the stellar musicianship of his bandmates, and the top-notch production quality make this album a must-listen for any jazz enthusiast. Whether you're a longtime fan of Dexter Gordon or new to his music, "Go!" is an album that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
