Description
Kamasi Washington's "Harmony of Difference" is a compelling and ambitious EP that was released on September 29, 2017, through the label Young Turks. This project follows his critically acclaimed 2015 album "The Epic" and continues to showcase Washington's prowess as a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. The EP was initially conceived as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art's 2017 Biennial, where it was presented alongside a short film by A.G. Rojas and paintings by Kamasi's sister, Amani Washington.
"Harmony of Difference" is structured around the concept of counterpoint, a musical technique that involves the interplay of distinct melodic lines. The EP consists of six tracks, each exploring different themes and emotions, ultimately converging into a cohesive and harmonious whole. The tracklist includes "Desire," "Humility," "Knowledge," "Perspective," "Integrity," and the expansive final piece, "Truth."
The opening track, "Desire," sets the tone with a lush and soulful arrangement, featuring Washington's signature tenor saxophone sound. The composition is both meditative and expressive, drawing the listener into the EP's thematic journey. "Humility" follows with a more upbeat and rhythmic approach, incorporating elements of funk and jazz fusion. The interplay between the brass section and the rhythm section is particularly noteworthy, showcasing the tight musicianship of Washington's ensemble.
"Knowledge" continues the exploration with a more complex and intricate arrangement. The track features a dynamic interplay of melodies and harmonies, reflecting the intellectual pursuit of understanding and wisdom. The musicians' technical proficiency is on full display, with each instrument contributing to the rich tapestry of sound.
"Perspective" shifts the mood with a more contemplative and introspective tone. The composition is characterized by its subtle and nuanced interplay of instruments, creating a sense of depth and space. The track invites the listener to reflect on their own viewpoints and experiences, aligning with the EP's overarching theme of harmony through difference.
"Integrity" brings a sense of resolve and conviction to the EP. The composition is bold and assertive, with powerful solos and a driving rhythm. The track embodies the idea of staying true to one's principles and values, even in the face of adversity.
The EP culminates with the 13-minute opus "Truth." This final track is a masterful synthesis of the preceding themes, weaving together the various melodic and harmonic elements into a unified and transcendent whole. "Truth" features a choir, adding a layer of vocal harmony that elevates the composition to a spiritual and uplifting climax. The track's expansive and cinematic quality makes it a fitting conclusion to the EP, encapsulating the essence of "Harmony of Difference."
Kamasi Washington's "Harmony of Difference" is a testament to his ability to blend technical mastery with emotional depth. The EP's exploration of counterpoint and its thematic focus on unity through diversity resonate deeply in both a musical and cultural context. Washington's ensemble, which includes notable musicians such as Thundercat on bass, Ronald Bruner Jr. on drums, and Patrice Quinn on vocals, delivers a performance that is both cohesive and dynamic.
In summary, "Harmony of Difference" is a remarkable work that highlights Kamasi Washington's innovative approach to jazz. The EP's intricate compositions, skilled musicianship, and profound thematic exploration make it a standout project in Washington's discography. It is a must-listen for fans of contemporary jazz and anyone interested in the transformative power of music.
