Description

Nina Simone's album "I Put A Spell On You," released in 1965, stands as a testament to her extraordinary talent and versatility as a musician. This album, produced by Hal Mooney and released under the Philips Records label, showcases Simone's ability to blend various genres, including jazz, blues, pop, and classical music, into a cohesive and compelling body of work.

The title track, "I Put A Spell On You," originally written and performed by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, is transformed by Simone into a haunting and powerful rendition. Her deep, emotive voice and dramatic delivery imbue the song with a sense of urgency and passion that is both captivating and unsettling. This track sets the tone for the rest of the album, highlighting Simone's unique ability to reinterpret and breathe new life into existing songs.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Feeling Good," a song written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the musical "The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd." Simone's version has become iconic, with its soaring vocals and triumphant orchestration. The song's themes of liberation and renewal resonate deeply, and Simone's performance is nothing short of exhilarating.

"My Baby Just Cares for Me" is another highlight, showcasing Simone's playful side. This jazz standard, originally written by Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn, is delivered with a light, swinging rhythm and Simone's charming, expressive vocals. The song's inclusion on the album adds a touch of whimsy and demonstrates Simone's ability to navigate different moods and styles with ease.

Simone's classical training is evident in her rendition of "Love Me or Leave Me," a song that features a stunning piano solo inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier." This track exemplifies her technical prowess and her ability to seamlessly blend classical and jazz elements, creating a sound that is uniquely her own.

The album also includes "Ne Me Quitte Pas," a cover of Jacques Brel's poignant ballad. Simone sings in French, and her heartfelt delivery captures the song's deep sense of longing and melancholy. This track is a testament to her linguistic versatility and her ability to convey profound emotion through her music.

"July Tree," written by Simone and her then-husband Andy Stroud, is a beautiful, introspective piece that showcases her songwriting skills. The song's gentle melody and reflective lyrics provide a moment of calm and introspection amidst the more dramatic tracks on the album.

"Beautiful Land," another track from the musical "The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd," is given a soulful and stirring interpretation by Simone. Her powerful vocals and the lush orchestration create a sense of grandeur and emotional depth.

The album closes with "Gimme Some," a lively and upbeat track that leaves the listener on a high note. Simone's energetic performance and the infectious rhythm make this song a fitting conclusion to a diverse and dynamic album.

"I Put A Spell On You" is a masterful showcase of Nina Simone's extraordinary talent and versatility. Her ability to reinterpret songs, infuse them with her unique style, and convey deep emotion through her music is unparalleled. This album remains a timeless classic and a testament to Simone's enduring legacy as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.
