"A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas!" is a festive album by The Count Basie Orchestra, directed by Scotty Barnhart. Released in 2015, this album marks a significant addition to the orchestra's extensive discography, blending the timeless swing of Count Basie's legacy with the joyful spirit of Christmas.
The Count Basie Orchestra, originally formed by the legendary pianist and bandleader Count Basie in 1935, has been a cornerstone of big band jazz for decades. Under the direction of Scotty Barnhart, a renowned trumpeter and educator, the orchestra continues to uphold Basie's tradition of excellence while infusing new energy and creativity into their performances.
"A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas!" features a collection of classic Christmas songs, reimagined with the orchestra's signature swing style. The album opens with a lively rendition of "Jingle Bells," setting the tone for a festive and swinging journey through holiday favorites. The arrangements are meticulously crafted, showcasing the orchestra's tight ensemble playing and dynamic range.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" The arrangement captures the playful and joyous essence of the song, with the brass and woodwind sections delivering crisp and vibrant performances. The rhythm section, anchored by the piano, bass, and drums, provides a solid foundation, driving the swing feel that is characteristic of the Basie sound.
The album also features several guest artists, adding a unique flavor to the traditional big band arrangements. Vocalist Johnny Mathis lends his smooth and velvety voice to "It's the Holiday Season," bringing a touch of nostalgia and warmth to the track. His collaboration with the orchestra is seamless, highlighting the versatility and adaptability of the ensemble.
Another notable guest appearance is by jazz vocalist Carmen Bradford, who delivers a soulful and spirited performance on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Bradford's rich and expressive voice is complemented by the lush harmonies of the orchestra, creating a heartfelt and memorable rendition of the classic tune.
Throughout the album, Scotty Barnhart's direction is evident in the precision and cohesiveness of the performances. His deep understanding of the Basie tradition, combined with his own artistic vision, results in arrangements that are both respectful of the past and innovative in their execution. Barnhart's trumpet playing is also featured prominently on several tracks, adding a personal touch to the album.
The production quality of "A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas!" is top-notch, capturing the full spectrum of the orchestra's sound. The recording is crisp and clear, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining a balanced and cohesive overall mix. The attention to detail in the production enhances the listening experience, making it feel as though the listener is right there in the room with the orchestra.
In conclusion, "A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas!" is a delightful and masterfully executed album that brings the joy and spirit of the holiday season to life through the timeless sound of the Count Basie Orchestra. Under the direction of Scotty Barnhart, the orchestra continues to honor Basie's legacy while infusing new energy and creativity into their performances. This album is a must-listen for fans of big band jazz and anyone looking to add a swingin' touch to their Christmas celebrations.
