Description

"Our New Orleans 2005: A Benefit Album" is a compilation album released on December 6, 2005, by Nonesuch Records. The album was created in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005, causing widespread destruction and displacing thousands of residents. The album features a diverse array of New Orleans musicians, each contributing tracks that reflect the rich musical heritage of the city and its resilience in the face of disaster.

The album opens with "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" by Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a poignant and fitting start that sets the tone for the rest of the compilation. This classic jazz standard, originally made famous by Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, is given a heartfelt rendition that captures the longing and love for the city.

One of the standout tracks is "Treme Song" by John Boutté, which later became the theme song for the HBO series "Treme." Boutté's soulful voice and the song's infectious rhythm encapsulate the spirit of the Treme neighborhood, known for its vibrant culture and musical history.

Dr. John, a legendary figure in New Orleans music, contributes "World I Never Made," a bluesy track that showcases his distinctive voice and piano playing. The song's lyrics, reflecting a sense of bewilderment and loss, resonate deeply in the context of the hurricane's aftermath.

Irma Thomas, often referred to as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans," delivers a powerful performance with "Back Water Blues." Her emotive voice and the song's somber tone convey the struggles faced by those affected by the flooding. Thomas's contribution is a reminder of her enduring talent and the emotional depth she brings to her music.

Allen Toussaint, another iconic New Orleans musician, offers "Yes We Can Can," a song he originally wrote for the Pointer Sisters. This version, infused with Toussaint's signature piano style and optimistic lyrics, serves as a rallying cry for unity and perseverance.

The album also features contributions from other notable artists such as Buckwheat Zydeco, who brings the lively sounds of zydeco music with "Cryin' in the Streets," and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, whose "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now" is a jubilant and energetic track that highlights the brass band's dynamic sound.

One of the more unique tracks is "Prayer for New Orleans" by Charlie Miller, a haunting instrumental piece that blends jazz and classical elements. The track's somber mood and intricate arrangement make it a standout on the album.

"Our New Orleans 2005" is not just a collection of songs; it is a testament to the resilience and cultural richness of New Orleans. The album's proceeds were donated to Habitat for Humanity to aid in the rebuilding efforts, making it a project with both artistic and humanitarian significance.

The production quality of the album is top-notch, with each track capturing the essence of the artists' performances. The liner notes provide additional context, offering insights into the creation of the album and the significance of each track.

In conclusion, "Our New Orleans 2005: A Benefit Album" is a powerful and moving tribute to a city that has faced immense challenges. The album brings together a diverse group of musicians, each contributing their unique sound to create a cohesive and emotionally resonant collection. It stands as a reminder of the enduring spirit of New Orleans and the unifying power of music in times of crisis. Whether you are a fan of jazz, blues, soul, or zydeco, this album offers something for everyone and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of community and resilience.
