Description
"Absolutely" is the second studio album by the British ska band Madness, released on September 26, 1980, by Stiff Records. The album is a significant entry in the band's discography, showcasing their unique blend of ska, pop, and new wave influences. It followed their successful debut album, "One Step Beyond..." and helped to cement their place in the British music scene of the early 1980s.
The album opens with the energetic track "Baggy Trousers," which became one of Madness's most iconic songs. It captures the band's playful and nostalgic look at school life, driven by a catchy melody and the distinctive ska rhythm that defines much of their work. The song was a commercial success, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.
Another standout track is "Embarrassment," which deals with the sensitive subject of teenage pregnancy and the social stigma that can accompany it. The song's poignant lyrics and upbeat tempo create a compelling contrast, showcasing the band's ability to tackle serious themes with their characteristic sound.
"Absolutely" also features "The Return of the Los Palmas 7," an instrumental track that highlights the band's musical versatility. The song's jazzy feel and intricate arrangements demonstrate Madness's ability to experiment with different genres while maintaining their signature style.
The album's production, handled by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, is polished and cohesive, allowing the band's energetic performances to shine through. The use of brass instruments, particularly the saxophone and trumpet, adds a rich layer to the album's sound, enhancing the ska influence that is central to Madness's music.
Lyrically, "Absolutely" covers a range of topics, from the lighthearted and humorous to the more serious and introspective. Songs like "E.R.N.I.E." and "Close Escape" showcase the band's wit and storytelling ability, while tracks like "In the Rain" and "You Said" reveal a more reflective side.
The album's cover art, featuring the band members in a chaotic street scene, reflects the lively and eclectic nature of the music within. It captures the essence of Madness's image as a fun-loving and slightly anarchic group, which resonated with their fans and contributed to their lasting appeal.
"Absolutely" received positive reviews from critics upon its release, with many praising the band's ability to evolve their sound while staying true to their roots. The album's success helped to solidify Madness's reputation as one of the leading bands of the ska revival movement, and it remains a beloved part of their catalog.
In conclusion, "Absolutely" is a vibrant and dynamic album that showcases Madness at the height of their creative powers. Its blend of catchy melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and diverse musical influences make it a standout release in the band's discography and a classic of the ska genre. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Madness's music, "Absolutely" is an album that is sure to entertain and impress.
