Description
Shaggy's album "Wah Gwaan?!" was released on May 10, 2019, under the label The Cherrytree Music Company, Brooklyn Knights Entertainment, and 300 Entertainment. This album marks a significant return for the Jamaican-American reggae fusion artist, who is best known for his hits like "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel." "Wah Gwaan?!" is Shaggy's twelfth studio album and showcases his signature blend of reggae, dancehall, and pop influences.
The album opens with the track "Caribbean Way," which sets the tone with its upbeat rhythm and vibrant energy. Shaggy's distinctive voice and charismatic delivery are immediately recognizable, and the song's infectious melody makes it a strong opener. The title track, "Wah Gwaan?!," follows, featuring a catchy hook and a laid-back groove that captures the essence of Shaggy's musical style.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "You," a collaboration with Canadian singer Alexander Stewart. The song combines reggae beats with pop sensibilities, creating a radio-friendly tune that highlights Shaggy's versatility as an artist. Another notable collaboration is "Money Up," featuring dancehall artist Noah Powa. The track's energetic beat and catchy chorus make it a potential hit for the dance floors.
Shaggy also explores more introspective themes on the album. "Live" is a reflective track that discusses the importance of living life to the fullest and appreciating the present moment. The song's mellow vibe and thoughtful lyrics provide a nice contrast to the more upbeat tracks on the album.
"Supernatural" is another highlight, featuring Shaggy's smooth vocals over a laid-back reggae groove. The song's romantic lyrics and catchy melody make it a standout track that showcases Shaggy's ability to create timeless love songs. "Wrong Room" is a playful track that tells the story of a humorous misunderstanding, with Shaggy's storytelling skills on full display.
The production on "Wah Gwaan?!" is polished and contemporary, with a mix of live instrumentation and electronic elements. The album's sound is a testament to Shaggy's ability to stay relevant in the ever-evolving music industry while staying true to his roots. The production team, including Sting International and Dwayne "iLL Wayno" Shippy, has done an excellent job of creating a cohesive sound that complements Shaggy's unique style.
One of the album's strengths is its ability to appeal to a wide audience. Fans of Shaggy's earlier work will appreciate the familiar reggae and dancehall influences, while new listeners will be drawn in by the catchy hooks and modern production. The album's diverse range of songs ensures that there is something for everyone, from party anthems to introspective ballads.
In conclusion, "Wah Gwaan?!" is a solid addition to Shaggy's discography. The album showcases his versatility as an artist and his ability to create music that is both timeless and contemporary. With its mix of upbeat tracks, romantic ballads, and introspective songs, "Wah Gwaan?!" is a well-rounded album that will appeal to both longtime fans and new listeners alike. Shaggy's charismatic delivery and distinctive voice are as strong as ever, making this album a must-listen for anyone who appreciates reggae and dancehall music.
