Description

"Why Me? Why Not." is the second solo studio album by English singer and songwriter Liam Gallagher, released on September 20, 2019. Following the success of his debut solo album "As You Were" in 2017, Gallagher's sophomore effort continues to solidify his place in the modern rock landscape, while also paying homage to his roots in the iconic Britpop band Oasis.

The album was produced by Greg Kurstin and Andrew Wyatt, both of whom also contributed to the writing process. Kurstin, known for his work with artists like Adele and Foo Fighters, brings a polished yet dynamic production style to the album. Wyatt, a member of the band Miike Snow, adds a layer of contemporary songwriting that complements Gallagher's classic rock sensibilities.

"Why Me? Why Not." opens with the anthemic "Shockwave," a track that immediately sets the tone with its driving guitars and Gallagher's unmistakable vocal delivery. The song was released as the lead single and quickly became a fan favorite, showcasing Gallagher's ability to craft memorable hooks and powerful choruses.

The album's title track, "Why Me? Why Not.," is a standout with its infectious melody and introspective lyrics. Gallagher has stated in interviews that the title was inspired by a drawing given to him by John Lennon, which he received from a fan. This connection to Lennon is evident throughout the album, as Gallagher channels the spirit of the Beatles in both his songwriting and vocal performance.

One of the album's highlights is "One of Us," a poignant track that reflects on themes of family and reconciliation. The song features a string arrangement that adds emotional depth, and Gallagher's vocals are particularly heartfelt. The accompanying music video, directed by Anthony Byrne, further emphasizes the song's themes with its nostalgic imagery and references to Gallagher's past.

"Now That I've Found You" is another notable track, written as a tribute to Gallagher's daughter, Molly. The song's upbeat tempo and uplifting lyrics make it one of the more optimistic moments on the album. Gallagher's genuine affection for his daughter shines through, adding a personal touch to the record.

"Be Still" and "Halo" are both energetic rockers that harken back to Gallagher's Oasis days, with their swaggering riffs and confident vocals. These tracks are sure to please long-time fans who appreciate Gallagher's signature style. "The River" is another high-energy song that features a bluesy guitar riff and socially conscious lyrics, addressing issues like corruption and environmental destruction.

The album also includes more introspective moments, such as "Once" and "Alright Now." "Once" is a reflective ballad that looks back on past glories with a sense of nostalgia and acceptance. Gallagher's vocal performance is particularly strong here, conveying a sense of vulnerability that adds depth to the song. "Alright Now" is a mid-tempo track that offers a message of resilience and hope, with its soothing melody and reassuring lyrics.

"Why Me? Why Not." closes with "Gone," a powerful track that combines Gallagher's raw vocal delivery with a lush instrumental arrangement. The song serves as a fitting conclusion to the album, encapsulating its themes of reflection, resilience, and redemption.

Overall, "Why Me? Why Not." is a cohesive and well-crafted album that showcases Liam Gallagher's growth as a solo artist. While it retains the rock 'n' roll attitude and swagger that fans have come to expect, it also reveals a more introspective and mature side of Gallagher. The album's blend of classic rock influences and contemporary production makes it a compelling listen for both long-time fans and new listeners alike. With "Why Me? Why Not.," Gallagher proves that he is not just a relic of the past, but a relevant and vital force in today's music scene.
