Description
Missy Higgins' fifth studio album, "Solastalgia," released on May 4, 2018, is a poignant exploration of environmental and personal themes, reflecting the Australian singer-songwriter's deep concern for the planet and her own emotional landscape. The term "solastalgia" itself, coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht, refers to the distress caused by environmental change, and this concept is woven throughout the album's 12 tracks.
The album opens with "Starting Again," a song that sets the tone for the introspective and often melancholic journey that follows. Higgins' signature piano-driven melodies and emotive vocals are immediately evident, drawing listeners into her world of reflection and renewal. The track speaks to the idea of new beginnings, a recurring theme in her work.
"Solastalgia" continues with "Futon Couch," a more upbeat and catchy tune that contrasts with the album's generally somber mood. This song, inspired by Higgins' own experience of meeting her partner, showcases her ability to blend personal anecdotes with broader themes. The infectious chorus and playful lyrics make it one of the standout tracks on the album.
"Hallucinate" delves into the darker side of human experience, with haunting melodies and lyrics that explore themes of mental health and existential dread. Higgins' vocal delivery is particularly powerful here, conveying a sense of vulnerability and raw emotion that resonates deeply.
The title track, "Solastalgia," is a haunting ballad that encapsulates the album's central theme of environmental grief. Higgins' lyrics poignantly describe the pain of witnessing the destruction of the natural world, and the song's sparse arrangement allows her voice to take center stage, delivering a powerful message about the urgency of environmental action.
"How Was I to Know" and "The Difference" continue the album's exploration of personal and environmental themes, with the former focusing on the complexities of relationships and the latter addressing the impact of human actions on the planet. Both tracks feature Higgins' trademark blend of introspective lyrics and lush, melodic arrangements.
"Edge of Something" is another highlight, with its driving rhythm and anthemic chorus. The song speaks to the feeling of being on the brink of change, both personally and globally, and its uplifting energy provides a counterbalance to some of the album's more somber moments.
"Legendary" is a tender ballad that pays tribute to the strength and resilience of women, inspired by the birth of Higgins' daughter. The song's gentle piano and strings create a soothing backdrop for Higgins' heartfelt lyrics, making it one of the most emotionally resonant tracks on the album.
"Don't Look Down" and "Cemetery" continue to explore themes of loss and renewal, with the former offering a message of hope and resilience and the latter reflecting on the inevitability of change and the passage of time. Both songs showcase Higgins' ability to craft deeply personal and universally relatable lyrics.
The album closes with "100 Round the Bends" and "The Old Star," two tracks that encapsulate the journey of "Solastalgia." "100 Round the Bends" is a reflective, mid-tempo song that speaks to the idea of finding one's way through life's twists and turns, while "The Old Star" is a gentle, acoustic ballad that offers a sense of closure and acceptance.
Overall, "Solastalgia" is a deeply moving and thought-provoking album that showcases Missy Higgins' growth as an artist and her commitment to addressing important issues through her music. The album's blend of personal and environmental themes, combined with Higgins' emotive vocals and lush arrangements, make it a standout addition to her discography. Fans of Higgins' previous work will find much to appreciate here, while new listeners will be drawn in by the album's powerful messages and beautiful melodies.
