Description
"Angles," the fourth studio album by American rock band The Strokes, was released on March 18, 2011, by RCA Records. This album marked a significant departure from their previous work, both in terms of its production process and its musical style. The Strokes, known for their garage rock revival sound, took a more collaborative approach to the creation of "Angles," which resulted in a diverse and eclectic mix of tracks.
The production of "Angles" was notably different from the band's earlier albums. For the first time, the band members worked separately, sending files back and forth rather than recording together in the studio. This method was partly due to frontman Julian Casablancas's desire to give more creative control to the other members of the band. Casablancas recorded his vocals separately and communicated with the band via email, which was a stark contrast to the more cohesive and collective recording sessions of their previous albums.
Musically, "Angles" showcases a variety of influences and styles, reflecting the band's willingness to experiment and evolve. The album opens with "Machu Picchu," a track that blends reggae-inspired rhythms with the band's signature guitar riffs. This song sets the tone for the album, indicating that listeners can expect a departure from the straightforward rock sound of their earlier work.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Under Cover of Darkness," which was also the lead single. This song is perhaps the closest to the classic Strokes sound, featuring catchy guitar hooks and Casablancas's distinctive vocal delivery. It received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, who appreciated its energetic and familiar feel.
Another notable track is "Two Kinds of Happiness," which combines new wave influences with a driving beat and melodic guitar lines. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make it one of the more memorable tracks on the album. "Taken for a Fool" is another highlight, with its infectious rhythm and clever lyrics showcasing the band's knack for crafting engaging rock songs.
However, "Angles" is not without its experimental moments. "Games" features synthesizers and a more electronic sound, which was a new direction for the band. This track, along with "You're So Right," which has a darker and more aggressive tone, demonstrates the band's willingness to push their musical boundaries.
The album's production, handled by Gus Oberg and the band members themselves, received mixed reviews. Some critics praised the polished and varied sound, while others felt that the disjointed recording process led to a lack of cohesion. Despite this, "Angles" was generally well-received and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 chart.
Lyrically, "Angles" explores themes of disillusionment, relationships, and personal struggles. Casablancas's lyrics are often introspective and reflective, adding depth to the album's diverse soundscapes. The title "Angles" itself suggests different perspectives and viewpoints, which is fitting given the varied musical styles and collaborative nature of the album.
In conclusion, "Angles" represents a bold and adventurous step for The Strokes. While it may not have the immediate impact of their earlier work, it showcases the band's willingness to experiment and evolve. The album's mix of familiar rock elements and new influences makes it a compelling listen for both longtime fans and newcomers. Despite the challenges of its production, "Angles" stands as a testament to The Strokes' enduring creativity and ability to adapt to new musical landscapes.
