Description

Weezer's "OK Human," released on January 29, 2021, marks a significant departure from the band's typical sound, embracing orchestral arrangements and introspective lyrics. This album, the band's fourteenth studio effort, showcases a more vulnerable and experimental side of Weezer, diverging from their usual power-pop and rock roots.

The album's title, "OK Human," is a playful nod to Radiohead's seminal album "OK Computer," but the similarities largely end there. While "OK Computer" delves into themes of technology and alienation, "OK Human" focuses on human connection and introspection, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The album was recorded during the pandemic, which influenced its themes and the decision to use a 38-piece orchestra, providing a lush, organic sound that contrasts sharply with the band's previous work.

"OK Human" opens with "All My Favorite Songs," a track that sets the tone for the album with its melancholic yet catchy melody. The song's lyrics reflect a sense of disconnection and longing, themes that resonate throughout the album. Rivers Cuomo's songwriting shines here, blending personal reflection with universal sentiments.

"Aloo Gobi" follows, featuring intricate string arrangements and a bouncy rhythm. The song's lyrics touch on the monotony of daily life, a feeling many can relate to, especially during the pandemic. The orchestral elements add depth and richness to the track, showcasing the band's willingness to experiment and evolve.

"Numbers" is a standout track, with its haunting piano and introspective lyrics. The song explores themes of self-worth and the pressures of societal expectations, with Cuomo's emotive vocals delivering a poignant performance. The orchestral backing enhances the song's emotional impact, creating a powerful listening experience.

"Playing My Piano" is another highlight, offering a glimpse into Cuomo's personal life. The song's lyrics describe his solace in playing the piano, a refuge from the chaos of the outside world. The track's intimate feel is complemented by the lush orchestration, making it one of the album's most memorable moments.

"Mirror Image" is a brief but impactful track, clocking in at just over a minute. Despite its short length, the song's introspective lyrics and delicate arrangement leave a lasting impression. The track serves as a bridge between the album's more substantial songs, maintaining the overall flow and cohesion.

"Bird with a Broken Wing" is a poignant ballad that showcases Cuomo's lyrical prowess. The song's themes of vulnerability and resilience are underscored by the orchestral arrangement, creating a sense of grandeur and emotional depth. The track is a testament to the band's ability to craft deeply affecting music.

"Dead Roses" continues the album's introspective journey, with its somber lyrics and haunting melody. The song's orchestration adds a layer of complexity, enhancing the emotional weight of the track. Cuomo's vocals are particularly expressive here, conveying a sense of longing and melancholy.

"Everything Happens for a Reason" is a brief interlude that features a simple piano melody and reflective lyrics. The track serves as a moment of calm amidst the album's more elaborate arrangements, providing a sense of balance and continuity.

"Here Comes the Rain" offers a more upbeat and hopeful tone, with its lively orchestration and optimistic lyrics. The song's infectious melody and positive message provide a refreshing contrast to the album's more somber moments.

The album closes with "La Brea Tar Pits," a track that encapsulates the themes of introspection and human connection. The song's lush orchestration and reflective lyrics provide a fitting conclusion to the album, leaving listeners with a sense of closure and contemplation.

Overall, "OK Human" is a bold and refreshing departure for Weezer, showcasing their willingness to experiment and evolve. The album's orchestral arrangements and introspective lyrics offer a new dimension to the band's sound, resulting in a deeply affecting and memorable listening experience. "OK Human" stands as a testament to Weezer's enduring creativity and ability to surprise their audience.
