Description
Released on September 29, 1977, "The Stranger" is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel. This album marked a significant turning point in Joel's career, both commercially and artistically, and is often regarded as one of his finest works. Produced by Phil Ramone, "The Stranger" showcases Joel's versatility as a musician and his ability to blend various musical styles, from rock and pop to jazz and classical influences.
The album opens with "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," a track that captures the essence of working-class aspirations and frustrations. With its catchy melody and relatable lyrics, it quickly became a fan favorite. The title track, "The Stranger," follows, featuring a haunting whistle motif and a blend of rock and jazz elements that highlight Joel's storytelling prowess.
"Just the Way You Are" is perhaps one of the most well-known songs from the album. This ballad, written for Joel's then-wife Elizabeth Weber, won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1979. Its smooth saxophone solo, played by Phil Woods, and heartfelt lyrics make it a timeless classic.
"Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is a multi-part epic that tells the story of Brenda and Eddie, a couple whose high school romance fades over time. This track is a testament to Joel's ability to craft vivid narratives within his songs, and its complex structure and dynamic shifts make it a standout on the album.
"Vienna" is a reflective and introspective song that encourages listeners to slow down and appreciate life's journey. Its delicate piano arrangement and poignant lyrics have made it a beloved track among fans.
"Only the Good Die Young" is a lively and controversial song that deals with themes of youthful rebellion and desire. Its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus contrast with its provocative lyrics, which led to some radio stations banning the song upon its release.
"She's Always a Woman" is another ballad that showcases Joel's softer side. Its gentle melody and tender lyrics paint a picture of a complex and loving relationship. The song's simplicity and emotional depth have made it a favorite at weddings and romantic occasions.
"Get It Right the First Time" and "Everybody Has a Dream" round out the album, with the latter featuring a gospel-inspired arrangement and a hopeful message.
**Commercial and Critical Reception**
"The Stranger" was a commercial success, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and becoming Joel's first album to enter the top ten. It has since been certified multi-platinum by the RIAA, with over 10 million copies sold in the United States alone. The album's success helped establish Billy Joel as a major force in the music industry and paved the way for his subsequent albums.
Critically, "The Stranger" received widespread acclaim. Reviewers praised Joel's songwriting, the album's production quality, and the cohesive blend of musical styles. Rolling Stone magazine included it in their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and it remains a beloved classic in Joel's discography.
**Legacy**
"The Stranger" solidified Billy Joel's reputation as one of the premier singer-songwriters of his generation. Its timeless songs continue to resonate with audiences, and the album's influence can be heard in the work of countless artists who followed. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to Joel's music, "The Stranger" is an essential listen that captures the essence of his artistry and the spirit of the late 1970s.
