Description
"Money for Nothing" is a compilation album by the British rock band Dire Straits, released in October 1988. The album serves as a greatest hits collection, featuring some of the band's most successful and beloved tracks from their career up to that point. It was released by Vertigo Records internationally and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States.
The album opens with the iconic track "Sultans of Swing," which was originally released on their 1978 self-titled debut album. This song is widely regarded as one of Dire Straits' signature tracks, showcasing Mark Knopfler's distinctive fingerstyle guitar playing and storytelling lyrics. The song's infectious rhythm and memorable guitar solos helped it become a major hit and established the band's presence in the rock music scene.
Another standout track on the album is "Money for Nothing," which was originally featured on their 1985 album "Brothers in Arms." This song became one of Dire Straits' biggest hits, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song is known for its catchy guitar riff, which was played by Knopfler on a Gibson Les Paul Standard, and its satirical lyrics about the music industry. The song also features guest vocals by Sting, who sings the famous "I want my MTV" line.
"Money for Nothing" also includes the track "Walk of Life," another hit from the "Brothers in Arms" album. This upbeat and catchy song features a prominent keyboard riff and has become a staple at sporting events and celebrations. Its infectious melody and feel-good lyrics make it one of the band's most enduring songs.
The compilation also features "Romeo and Juliet," a track from their 1980 album "Making Movies." This song is a poignant and romantic ballad that tells the story of star-crossed lovers. Knopfler's emotive guitar work and heartfelt lyrics have made this song a fan favorite and a highlight of the band's live performances.
Other notable tracks on the album include "Private Investigations," a moody and atmospheric song from their 1982 album "Love Over Gold," and "Twisting by the Pool," a fun and upbeat track that was released as a single in 1983. The album also includes "Tunnel of Love," another track from "Making Movies," which features an extended guitar solo and showcases the band's ability to blend rock with storytelling.
"Money for Nothing" was well-received by both fans and critics upon its release. It provided a comprehensive overview of Dire Straits' career up to that point and highlighted the band's versatility and musicianship. The album was a commercial success, reaching the top 10 in several countries and achieving multi-platinum status in the United States and the United Kingdom.
In addition to its musical content, the album's cover art is also noteworthy. The cover features a striking image of a guitar with a neon outline, which was designed by the artist Sutton Cooper. This image has become closely associated with the band and is instantly recognizable to fans.
Overall, "Money for Nothing" is an excellent compilation that captures the essence of Dire Straits' music. It serves as a perfect introduction for new listeners and a nostalgic trip for longtime fans. The album's selection of tracks showcases the band's ability to craft memorable songs with compelling lyrics and exceptional musicianship. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just discovering Dire Straits for the first time, "Money for Nothing" is a must-listen.
