Description
"Dead Ringer" is the second studio album by American rock musician Meat Loaf, released on September 4, 1981, by Epic Records. The album is a follow-up to his massively successful 1977 debut, "Bat Out of Hell," and features songs written by Jim Steinman, who also wrote the entirety of "Bat Out of Hell." The collaboration between Meat Loaf and Steinman is a significant aspect of the album, as Steinman's grandiose and theatrical songwriting style is a defining characteristic of Meat Loaf's music.
The album opens with the track "Peel Out," a high-energy song that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The song features powerful guitar riffs and Meat Loaf's signature dramatic vocal delivery. The lyrics, like many of Steinman's works, are filled with vivid imagery and a sense of urgency.
The second track, "I'm Gonna Love Her for Both of Us," continues the album's theme of passionate and intense love. The song showcases Meat Loaf's ability to convey deep emotion through his voice, and the arrangement includes a mix of rock and orchestral elements that create a rich, layered sound.
"More Than You Deserve" is a song that originally appeared in a musical of the same name, which Steinman wrote in the early 1970s. The song's inclusion on "Dead Ringer" highlights the theatrical roots of Meat Loaf and Steinman's collaboration. The track features a slower tempo and a more introspective tone compared to the rest of the album.
"I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back" is one of the standout tracks on the album, with its darkly humorous lyrics and driving rock beat. The song's title and lyrics reflect Steinman's penchant for blending melodrama with a touch of irony.
The title track, "Dead Ringer for Love," is a duet with Cher and is one of the most well-known songs from the album. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make it a fan favorite, and the chemistry between Meat Loaf and Cher is palpable. The song was a commercial success, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart.
"Read 'Em and Weep" is another highlight of the album, featuring a powerful vocal performance by Meat Loaf and a dramatic arrangement that builds to a climactic finish. The song was later covered by Barry Manilow, who had a hit with it in 1983.
"Nocturnal Pleasure" is a spoken word piece performed by Steinman, which serves as an interlude on the album. The piece adds to the theatrical atmosphere of the album and provides a moment of reflection before the final tracks.
"Dead Ringer" closes with "Everything Is Permitted," a song that combines rock and operatic elements to create a grand finale. The song's lyrics deal with themes of freedom and rebellion, which are common motifs in Steinman's writing.
Overall, "Dead Ringer" is a worthy follow-up to "Bat Out of Hell," showcasing Meat Loaf's powerful voice and Steinman's distinctive songwriting style. While it may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as its predecessor, the album has earned a place in the hearts of Meat Loaf's fans and remains an important part of his discography. The combination of rock, theatricality, and emotional intensity makes "Dead Ringer" a memorable and impactful album.
