Description
"McCartney III" is the 18th solo studio album by the legendary English musician Paul McCartney, released on December 18, 2020, by Capitol Records. This album is a part of a trilogy, following "McCartney" (1970) and "McCartney II" (1980), and it continues the tradition of McCartney playing all instruments and handling all production duties himself.
The album was recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 at McCartney's home studio in Sussex, England. This period of isolation provided McCartney with the opportunity to revisit unfinished compositions and create new material, resulting in a collection of songs that are both introspective and experimental.
"McCartney III" opens with "Long Tailed Winter Bird," an instrumental track that sets the tone for the album with its intricate guitar work and layered production. The song transitions seamlessly into "Find My Way," a more upbeat and melodic track that showcases McCartney's knack for catchy hooks and memorable lyrics.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Women and Wives," a reflective and soulful song that features McCartney's deep, resonant vocals and a sparse, piano-driven arrangement. The lyrics explore themes of love, loss, and the passage of time, making it one of the more poignant moments on the album.
"Pretty Boys" is another highlight, with its jangly guitars and breezy, laid-back vibe. The song's lyrics take a satirical look at the world of male modeling, adding a touch of humor to the album's otherwise introspective tone.
"Deep Deep Feeling" is the longest track on the album, clocking in at over eight minutes. This experimental piece features a hypnotic groove, layered vocals, and a shifting, almost psychedelic arrangement. The song's length and complexity make it a bold and ambitious addition to the album.
"Slidin'" is a rockier track, with a driving beat and heavy guitar riffs that harken back to McCartney's days with Wings. The song's energetic and raw sound provides a nice contrast to the more subdued tracks on the album.
The album closes with "Winter Bird / When Winter Comes," a medley that revisits the opening track's instrumental theme before transitioning into a previously unreleased song from the early 1990s. "When Winter Comes" features McCartney's signature acoustic guitar work and nostalgic lyrics that reflect on simpler times and the beauty of nature.
Overall, "McCartney III" is a testament to Paul McCartney's enduring creativity and musical talent. Despite being recorded under challenging circumstances, the album is a cohesive and engaging collection of songs that showcase McCartney's versatility as a songwriter and musician. Fans of his previous work will find much to enjoy here, while new listeners will appreciate the album's fresh and contemporary sound.
The production on "McCartney III" is top-notch, with a warm, organic feel that complements the intimate nature of the songs. McCartney's vocals are as strong as ever, and his multi-instrumental prowess is on full display throughout the album. The use of analog recording techniques and vintage equipment adds to the album's timeless quality.
In conclusion, "McCartney III" is a worthy addition to Paul McCartney's illustrious discography. It captures the essence of his musical journey over the past five decades while offering a glimpse into his creative process during a time of global uncertainty. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his music, "McCartney III" is an album that deserves a place in your collection.
