Description
Phil Collins' third solo studio album, "No Jacket Required," was released on January 25, 1985, by Virgin Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in the US. The album marked a significant commercial success for Collins, solidifying his status as a major solo artist in the 1980s. It features a blend of pop, rock, and R&B influences, showcasing Collins' versatility as a musician and songwriter.
The album opens with the energetic track "Sussudio," which became one of Collins' signature songs. Its infectious rhythm and catchy chorus helped it reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song's title, "Sussudio," is a nonsensical word that Collins improvised during the songwriting process, and it has since become synonymous with his name.
Another standout track is "One More Night," a ballad that also topped the Billboard Hot 100. The song's heartfelt lyrics and smooth melody highlight Collins' ability to convey deep emotion through his music. "One More Night" remains one of his most beloved ballads.
"Don't Lose My Number" and "Take Me Home" are other notable tracks on the album. "Don't Lose My Number" features a driving beat and memorable guitar riffs, while "Take Me Home" has a more introspective feel, with lyrics that reflect themes of longing and self-discovery. "Take Me Home" also features backing vocals from Sting and Peter Gabriel, adding to its rich, layered sound.
The album's production is polished and sophisticated, with Collins himself playing drums and keyboards, as well as providing lead vocals. He was joined by a talented group of musicians, including Daryl Stuermer on guitar, Leland Sklar on bass, and the Phenix Horns, who added a dynamic brass section to several tracks.
"No Jacket Required" received critical acclaim upon its release and won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. It also achieved massive commercial success, selling over 12 million copies in the United States alone and reaching number one on the charts in multiple countries.
The album's title, "No Jacket Required," was inspired by an incident in which Collins was denied entry to a restaurant because he was not wearing a jacket. This anecdote reflects the album's overall theme of breaking free from societal expectations and norms.
In addition to its hit singles, the album features several deep cuts that showcase Collins' range as an artist. "Inside Out" is a powerful track with a driving rhythm and introspective lyrics, while "Who Said I Would" has a funky groove that highlights Collins' ability to blend different musical styles.
"Long Long Way to Go" is a poignant song that addresses social and political issues, with backing vocals from Sting adding to its emotional impact. "Only You Know and I Know" is another upbeat track with a catchy melody and strong vocal performance from Collins.
Overall, "No Jacket Required" is a testament to Phil Collins' talent as a musician and songwriter. Its blend of catchy pop tunes, heartfelt ballads, and thoughtful lyrics make it a standout album in his discography. The album's success helped to cement Collins' status as one of the leading artists of the 1980s and continues to be celebrated by fans and critics alike.
