Description
**Album Review: Wolfmother - Cosmic Egg**
Wolfmother's sophomore album, "Cosmic Egg," released on October 23, 2009, is a testament to the band's ability to evolve while staying true to their hard rock roots. Following the success of their self-titled debut album in 2005, "Cosmic Egg" showcases a refined sound and a new lineup, with frontman Andrew Stockdale being the only remaining original member.
The album was produced by Alan Moulder, a renowned producer known for his work with bands like Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, and My Bloody Valentine. Moulder's influence is evident in the polished production quality of "Cosmic Egg," which balances raw energy with a clear, powerful sound.
"Cosmic Egg" features 12 tracks on the standard edition, with an additional four tracks on the deluxe edition. The album opens with "California Queen," a high-octane track that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Stockdale's distinctive vocals and heavy guitar riffs are immediately recognizable, and the song's driving rhythm is a perfect introduction to the album.
One of the standout tracks is "New Moon Rising," which was also the lead single. The song's infectious groove and catchy chorus make it a highlight of the album. The lyrics, which reference themes of change and renewal, are reflective of the band's own transformation during the making of the album.
"White Feather" is another notable track, with its funky bassline and upbeat tempo. The song showcases the band's versatility, blending elements of hard rock with a more danceable rhythm. "Sundial" and "In the Morning" are also strong tracks, with the former featuring a powerful riff and the latter offering a more introspective, acoustic-driven sound.
The title track, "Cosmic Egg," is a sprawling, epic song that encapsulates the album's themes of exploration and discovery. The song's dynamic structure, shifting from heavy, riff-laden sections to more melodic passages, demonstrates the band's ability to craft complex, engaging compositions.
Throughout the album, Stockdale's guitar work is a highlight, with solos that are both technically impressive and emotionally resonant. The rhythm section, featuring Ian Peres on bass and keyboards, Aidan Nemeth on rhythm guitar, and Dave Atkins on drums, provides a solid foundation for Stockdale's soaring vocals and guitar lines.
Lyrically, "Cosmic Egg" explores a range of themes, from personal introspection to broader, more cosmic musings. The album's title is a reference to a yoga pose, which Stockdale has said symbolizes the idea of rebirth and new beginnings. This theme is woven throughout the album, with songs like "Far Away" and "Pilgrim" reflecting on journeys, both physical and spiritual.
"Cosmic Egg" received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the band's ability to evolve while maintaining their signature sound. The album debuted at number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached the top 10 in several countries, including Australia and the UK.
In conclusion, "Cosmic Egg" is a strong follow-up to Wolfmother's debut album, showcasing the band's growth and evolution. With its blend of hard-hitting rock anthems and more introspective tracks, the album offers something for both longtime fans and new listeners. Andrew Stockdale's distinctive voice and guitar work, combined with the solid rhythm section, make "Cosmic Egg" a compelling and enjoyable listen.
