Description
"Machine Head - The Burning Red" is the third studio album by the American heavy metal band Machine Head, released on August 10, 1999, through Roadrunner Records. The album marked a significant departure from the band's previous work, incorporating elements of nu-metal and alternative metal, which was a controversial move among their fanbase and critics alike.
The album was produced by Ross Robinson, who was known for his work with bands like Korn and Slipknot, and his influence is evident throughout the record. "The Burning Red" features a more polished and accessible sound compared to Machine Head's earlier albums, "Burn My Eyes" and "The More Things Change...". This shift in style was seen as an attempt to reach a broader audience during the height of the nu-metal movement.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "From This Day," which showcases the band's new direction with its catchy chorus and groove-laden riffs. The song received significant airplay on rock radio stations and its music video was frequently featured on MTV, helping to boost the band's visibility. Another notable track is "The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears," which combines aggressive verses with a melodic chorus, exemplifying the band's blend of heavy and accessible elements.
The album also includes a cover of the Police's "Message in a Bottle," which was a bold choice that further highlighted the band's willingness to experiment with different styles. While some fans appreciated the diversity, others felt that it strayed too far from the band's thrash and groove metal roots.
Lyrically, "The Burning Red" explores themes of personal struggle, self-discovery, and emotional pain. Frontman Robb Flynn's vocal performance is more varied on this album, incorporating both clean singing and his signature growls. This dynamic range adds depth to the songs and complements the album's diverse musical landscape.
Despite the mixed reactions from fans and critics, "The Burning Red" was a commercial success. It peaked at number 88 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for sales in the UK. The album's success helped to solidify Machine Head's place in the metal scene, even as they continued to evolve their sound.
In retrospect, "The Burning Red" is often seen as a polarizing but pivotal moment in Machine Head's career. It demonstrated the band's willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of their genre, even if it meant alienating some of their core fans. For those who appreciate the nu-metal and alternative metal sounds of the late 1990s, the album offers a compelling snapshot of that era.
Overall, "The Burning Red" is a testament to Machine Head's versatility and willingness to evolve. While it may not be universally loved, it remains an important part of the band's discography and a reflection of a specific time in the metal genre's history. Whether you view it as a bold experiment or a misstep, there's no denying the impact it had on Machine Head's trajectory and the broader metal landscape.
