Description
"Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" is the second studio album by the American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on September 19, 1986, through Capitol Records. The album is widely regarded as one of the most influential thrash metal albums of all time and solidified Megadeth's place in the heavy metal pantheon.
The album was produced by Randy Burns and features the classic lineup of Dave Mustaine on vocals and guitar, David Ellefson on bass, Chris Poland on lead guitar, and Gar Samuelson on drums. This lineup is often credited with helping to define the technical and aggressive sound that Megadeth became known for.
"Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" opens with the track "Wake Up Dead," a song that showcases the band's technical prowess and Mustaine's intricate riffing. The song is a narrative about infidelity and paranoia, themes that recur throughout the album. The track is notable for its complex structure, featuring multiple tempo changes and a lack of a traditional chorus.
The title track, "Peace Sells," is one of Megadeth's most famous songs and has become a staple in their live performances. The song's iconic bassline, played by David Ellefson, is instantly recognizable and was even used as the theme for MTV News. Lyrically, the song is a critique of the American political system and the disillusionment of the youth, a sentiment that resonated with many fans during the 1980s.
"Devils Island" is another standout track, telling the story of a man condemned to a life of imprisonment on the infamous French penal colony. The song features blistering guitar solos from Chris Poland and showcases the band's ability to blend storytelling with their aggressive musical style.
"Good Mourning/Black Friday" is a two-part song that begins with a haunting instrumental intro before launching into a fast-paced thrash metal assault. The song's lyrics describe a serial killer's rampage, and Mustaine's vocal delivery adds to the chilling atmosphere.
"Bad Omen" delves into themes of occultism and supernatural forces, while "I Ain't Superstitious," a cover of the Willie Dixon blues classic, adds a unique twist to the album. Megadeth's version of the song is faster and heavier, demonstrating the band's ability to reinterpret and adapt different musical styles into their own.
"My Last Words" closes the album on a high note, with its rapid-fire drumming and intricate guitar work. The song's lyrics deal with the theme of Russian roulette, adding a sense of danger and urgency to the album's conclusion.
The production quality of "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" is a significant improvement over Megadeth's debut album, "Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!" Randy Burns' production helped to bring out the clarity and precision of the band's performance, making the album a benchmark for thrash metal production.
Upon its release, "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, peaking at number 76 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album's success helped to establish Megadeth as one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax.
In the years since its release, "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" has been reissued several times, including a remixed and remastered version in 2004, which featured improved sound quality and additional liner notes. The album's legacy continues to influence countless metal bands and remains a cornerstone of the genre.
In conclusion, "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" is a seminal album in the history of thrash metal. Its combination of technical musicianship, aggressive songwriting, and socially conscious lyrics make it a timeless classic that continues to resonate with fans old and new. Megadeth's second album not only solidified their place in the metal world but also set a high standard for the genre as a whole.
