Description
"Metallica & San Francisco Symphony - S&M2" is a live album that captures the iconic collaboration between the legendary heavy metal band Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony. Released on August 28, 2020, this album is a follow-up to their original 1999 "S&M" (Symphony & Metallica) album. The performances were recorded during two concerts on September 6 and 8, 2019, at the Chase Center in San Francisco, marking the grand opening of the venue.
The album features a blend of Metallica's hard-hitting metal sound with the lush, orchestral arrangements provided by the San Francisco Symphony, conducted by Edwin Outwater, with a special appearance by Michael Tilson Thomas. The collaboration brings a new dimension to Metallica's music, offering fans a unique listening experience that combines the raw energy of metal with the sophistication of classical music.
"S&M2" includes a mix of classic Metallica tracks and newer songs, all reimagined with orchestral arrangements. The album opens with "The Ecstasy of Gold," a piece composed by Ennio Morricone, which has been used as Metallica's concert intro for decades. This is followed by "The Call of Ktulu," an instrumental track from their 1984 album "Ride the Lightning," which showcases the seamless integration of the symphony with Metallica's powerful riffs.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "All Within My Hands," originally from the 2003 album "St. Anger." The S&M2 version is a stripped-down, acoustic rendition that highlights James Hetfield's vocal range and the emotional depth of the lyrics, complemented by the symphony's delicate accompaniment. Another highlight is "No Leaf Clover," a song that was first introduced in the original S&M album and has since become a fan favorite. The new performance retains the song's haunting quality while adding new layers of orchestral richness.
The album also features tracks from Metallica's more recent albums, such as "Moth Into Flame" from their 2016 album "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct." The symphonic arrangement adds a dramatic flair to the song, enhancing its intensity and complexity. "Halo on Fire," another track from the same album, benefits from the symphony's contribution, creating a dynamic and immersive listening experience.
"S&M2" is not just a rehash of the original S&M album; it includes fresh interpretations and new material that make it a distinct and worthwhile addition to Metallica's discography. The collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony brings out new facets of Metallica's music, highlighting the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical styles.
The production quality of the album is top-notch, capturing the live energy of the performances while ensuring that both the band and the symphony are given equal prominence in the mix. The album was produced by Greg Fidelman, who has worked with Metallica on several of their recent projects, ensuring a cohesive and polished final product.
In addition to the audio album, "S&M2" was also released as a concert film, directed by Wayne Isham, who has a long history of working with Metallica. The film provides a visual counterpart to the album, allowing fans to experience the grandeur of the live performances and the interaction between the band and the symphony.
Overall, "Metallica & San Francisco Symphony - S&M2" is a testament to Metallica's enduring appeal and their ability to push the boundaries of their music. The album offers a fresh take on their classic songs while introducing new material that benefits from the symphonic treatment. It is a must-listen for Metallica fans and anyone interested in the fusion of metal and classical music.
