Description
"On Parole" is an album by the British rock band Motörhead, which holds a unique place in the band's discography. Recorded in 1975 but not released until 1979, "On Parole" is often considered a prelude to the band's more widely recognized work. This album features the classic lineup of Lemmy Kilmister on bass and vocals, Larry Wallis on guitar, and Lucas Fox on drums, although Fox was later replaced by Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor during the recording sessions.
The album opens with "Motorhead," a track that would become one of the band's signature songs. This version of "Motorhead" is slightly different from the one that appears on their self-titled debut album, showcasing a rawer and less polished sound. Lemmy's gravelly voice and the driving bass line set the tone for the rest of the album, establishing the band's gritty and aggressive style.
"On Parole" also includes "Vibrator," a song that highlights Larry Wallis's influence on the band's early sound. Wallis, who was a former member of the Pink Fairies, brings a punk rock edge to the track, blending it with the heavy metal elements that Motörhead would become famous for. The song's lyrics are cheeky and irreverent, a hallmark of Lemmy's songwriting.
Another standout track is "Iron Horse/Born to Lose," a slower, blues-infused number that showcases the band's versatility. The song's narrative lyrics and melancholic tone provide a contrast to the high-energy tracks that dominate the album. This track, in particular, hints at the depth and range that Motörhead would continue to explore in their later work.
"On Parole" also features "The Watcher," a song written by Lemmy during his time with Hawkwind. This track is more psychedelic than the others on the album, reflecting Lemmy's previous musical endeavors. The inclusion of "The Watcher" serves as a bridge between Lemmy's past and the future direction of Motörhead.
The production of "On Parole" is notably different from the band's subsequent releases. The album was produced by Fritz Fryer, who was known for his work with the 1960s pop group The Four Pennies. Fryer's production style is more polished and less abrasive than the raw, unfiltered sound that would characterize Motörhead's later albums. This difference in production has led some fans to view "On Parole" as an outlier in the band's catalog.
Despite being recorded in 1975, "On Parole" was not released until 1979, after the success of Motörhead's self-titled debut album and their follow-up, "Overkill." The delay in the album's release was due to the record label's initial reluctance to put it out, as they were unsure of the band's commercial potential. However, the success of Motörhead's subsequent albums prompted the label to finally release "On Parole," capitalizing on the band's growing popularity.
In retrospect, "On Parole" is an essential piece of Motörhead's history. It captures the band in their formative years, experimenting with their sound and laying the groundwork for their future success. While it may not have the same impact as their later albums, "On Parole" offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of one of rock and roll's most iconic bands.
For fans of Motörhead, "On Parole" is a must-listen. It provides a deeper understanding of the band's evolution and showcases the raw talent and energy that would propel them to legendary status. The album's mix of punk, rock, and metal elements makes it a unique and valuable addition to any music collection.
