Description
"Bad Witch" is the ninth studio album by the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released on June 22, 2018, by The Null Corporation. The album is the final installment in a trilogy of releases, following the 2016 EP "Not the Actual Events" and the 2017 EP "Add Violence." "Bad Witch" stands out as a unique entry in Nine Inch Nails' discography, blending elements of industrial rock, electronic music, and jazz.
The album opens with "Shit Mirror," a track that immediately sets the tone with its aggressive guitar riffs and distorted vocals. Trent Reznor's signature production style is evident, with layers of noise and texture creating a dense, immersive soundscape. The song's lyrics reflect themes of self-doubt and introspection, common motifs in Reznor's work.
"Ahead of Ourselves" follows, maintaining the album's high energy with its driving beat and frenetic pace. The track's chaotic structure and abrasive sound design are reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails' earlier work, particularly their 1994 album "The Downward Spiral." Reznor's vocal delivery is raw and urgent, conveying a sense of desperation and urgency.
The third track, "Play the Goddamned Part," marks a departure from the album's initial intensity. This instrumental piece features a prominent saxophone, played by Reznor himself, adding a jazz-influenced element to the mix. The track's experimental nature showcases Reznor's willingness to push the boundaries of the industrial rock genre and explore new sonic territories.
"God Break Down the Door" is perhaps the most striking track on "Bad Witch." The song features a prominent saxophone line, reminiscent of David Bowie's final album "Blackstar," which Reznor has cited as an influence. The track's blend of electronic beats, live instrumentation, and Reznor's haunting vocals creates a sense of unease and tension. The lyrics, which touch on themes of mortality and existential dread, add to the song's dark, brooding atmosphere.
"I'm Not from This World" is another instrumental track, characterized by its minimalist approach and eerie ambiance. The song's repetitive, hypnotic rhythm and sparse arrangement create a sense of isolation and alienation. The track serves as a stark contrast to the more aggressive songs on the album, highlighting Reznor's versatility as a composer and producer.
The album closes with "Over and Out," a track that combines elements of ambient music and industrial rock. The song's slow, deliberate pace and melancholic melody create a sense of finality and closure. Reznor's vocals, processed with heavy reverb and delay, add to the track's ethereal quality. The lyrics, which reflect on themes of loss and acceptance, provide a fitting conclusion to the album.
"Bad Witch" received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its experimental approach and cohesive sound. The album's blend of industrial rock, electronic music, and jazz elements was seen as a bold and innovative move for Nine Inch Nails. Some critics noted the influence of David Bowie's "Blackstar" on the album, particularly in the use of saxophone and the exploration of darker themes.
In conclusion, "Bad Witch" is a compelling and ambitious album that showcases Nine Inch Nails' ability to evolve and experiment with their sound. The album's blend of aggressive rock, electronic beats, and jazz influences creates a unique and immersive listening experience. Trent Reznor's introspective lyrics and innovative production techniques make "Bad Witch" a standout entry in Nine Inch Nails' discography. Fans of the band and newcomers alike will find much to appreciate in this bold and boundary-pushing album.
