Description

"Get Happy!!" is the fourth studio album by Elvis Costello and the third with his backing band, The Attractions. Released on February 15, 1980, by F-Beat Records in the UK and Columbia Records in the US, the album marked a significant stylistic shift for Costello, embracing a more soulful and R&B-inspired sound compared to his earlier punk and new wave influences.

The album features 20 tracks, a notable increase from the standard 10-12 tracks typical of albums at the time. This decision was partly influenced by Costello's desire to provide value for money and to emulate the feel of classic soul records, which often featured shorter, punchier songs. The tracks on "Get Happy!!" are concise, with many clocking in at under three minutes, contributing to the album's brisk, energetic pace.

"Get Happy!!" was produced by Nick Lowe, who had worked with Costello on his previous albums. Lowe's production on this record is characterized by a raw, live sound that complements the album's retro aesthetic. The Attractions—Steve Nieve on keyboards, Bruce Thomas on bass, and Pete Thomas on drums—deliver tight, dynamic performances that anchor Costello's sharp songwriting and impassioned vocals.

The album opens with "Love for Tender," a fast-paced track that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Other standout tracks include "Opportunity," "The Imposter," and "High Fidelity," each showcasing Costello's knack for blending clever, biting lyrics with infectious melodies. "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down," a cover of a Sam & Dave song, is a highlight, demonstrating Costello's ability to reinterpret classic soul with his unique style.

Lyrically, "Get Happy!!" continues Costello's tradition of exploring themes of love, betrayal, and disillusionment, often with a cynical edge. Songs like "Secondary Modern" and "Motel Matches" delve into the complexities of relationships, while "Riot Act" and "Beaten to the Punch" reflect Costello's more politically charged side.

The album's cover art, designed by Barney Bubbles, is also notable. It features a retro design with a bold, colorful layout that echoes the visual style of 1960s soul records. The cover includes a playful nod to the album's title, with the words "Get Happy!!" prominently displayed in a vibrant, eye-catching font.

Upon its release, "Get Happy!!" received critical acclaim for its ambitious scope and successful genre experimentation. It reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and number 11 on the US Billboard 200, solidifying Costello's reputation as one of the most innovative and versatile artists of his generation.

In retrospect, "Get Happy!!" is often regarded as one of Costello's finest works. Its blend of soul, R&B, and new wave elements, combined with Costello's sharp songwriting and the Attractions' stellar musicianship, make it a standout album in his discography. The album's influence can be seen in the work of many artists who followed, and it remains a beloved classic among fans and critics alike.

Overall, "Get Happy!!" is a testament to Elvis Costello's ability to evolve and experiment with different musical styles while maintaining the lyrical wit and emotional depth that have defined his career. It is a vibrant, energetic record that continues to resonate with listeners more than four decades after its release.
