Description
"Matthew & Son", the debut album by Cat Stevens, was released on 10 March 1967. It marked the beginning of a remarkable career for the British singer-songwriter, who would go on to become one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 1970s. This album, however, captures a very different Cat Stevens than the one many listeners might be familiar with. It’s a snapshot of a young artist navigating the vibrant pop scene of the 1960s, full of energy, charm, and a knack for crafting catchy tunes.
The title track, "Matthew & Son", is perhaps the most well-known song from the album. It’s a sharp, observational piece about the monotony of working life, delivered with a jaunty melody and a lush arrangement. The song’s success—it reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart—helped establish Stevens as a rising star. Listening to it today, it’s easy to see why it resonated with audiences. The combination of its relatable lyrics and infectious tune makes it a standout track that still holds up.
The album as a whole is a fascinating mix of styles. Stevens was clearly influenced by the pop and rock sounds of the time, but there’s also a theatrical quality to many of the songs. Tracks like "I Love My Dog" and "Portobello Road" showcase his ability to tell stories through his music, while songs like "Here Comes My Baby" (later famously covered by The Tremeloes) highlight his gift for writing irresistible pop melodies. The production, handled by Mike Hurst, is polished and vibrant, with arrangements that often incorporate strings and brass to great effect.
What’s particularly striking about "Matthew & Son" is how it hints at the artist Stevens would later become. While the album is firmly rooted in the pop tradition of the 1960s, there are moments where his introspective and philosophical side begins to shine through. Songs like "The Tramp" and "Lady" have a reflective quality that feels ahead of their time, suggesting the more contemplative direction his music would take in the years to come.
It’s also worth noting the sheer ambition of the album. Stevens was just 18 years old when he recorded "Matthew & Son", yet he already displayed a remarkable maturity as a songwriter. The album’s themes range from love and heartbreak to social commentary, and Stevens tackles them all with a confidence and sophistication that belies his age. His voice, too, is a highlight—rich, expressive, and full of character.
While "Matthew & Son" might not have the same level of critical acclaim as some of Stevens’ later works, it’s an important part of his discography and a fascinating glimpse into his early career. It’s an album that captures the spirit of its time while also hinting at the timeless qualities that would define his music in the years to come. For fans of Cat Stevens, or anyone interested in the pop music of the 1960s, it’s well worth a listen.
