Description
Dave Matthews Band's album "Away From The World" was released on September 11, 2012, and it marked a significant return for the band after a three-year hiatus since their previous studio album, "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King." This album was notable not only for its music but also for its reception and the context in which it was released. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the band's fifth studio album to achieve this feat, which is a testament to their enduring popularity and the loyalty of their fanbase.
The album was produced by the legendary Steve Lillywhite, who had previously worked with the band on their earlier albums, including the iconic "Crash" and "Before These Crowded Streets." Lillywhite's involvement brought a sense of nostalgia and familiarity to the project, and his production style is evident throughout the album, with its rich instrumentation and layered soundscapes. The band members, including Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, and others, have spoken about how working with Lillywhite again felt like a homecoming, and this chemistry is palpable in the final product.
"Away From The World" features a blend of the band’s signature sound, which combines elements of rock, jazz, and folk. The album opens with "Broken Things," a reflective track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The lyrics explore themes of loss and longing, which resonate deeply with listeners. Another standout track is "Mercy," which showcases Matthews' poignant songwriting and the band's ability to create anthemic choruses that linger in your mind long after the song has ended. The song was also released as a single and received considerable airplay, further solidifying its place in the hearts of fans.
One of the most interesting aspects of this album is its cultural significance. Released in the wake of the economic downturn and amidst a politically charged atmosphere, the songs often reflect a sense of searching for hope and connection in a fractured world. Tracks like "If Only" and "The Riff" delve into personal and societal struggles, making the album feel particularly relevant to the times. Critics noted that the album's themes of introspection and resilience resonated with listeners, which contributed to its positive reception.
Critical reception for "Away From The World" was generally favorable. Major publications like Rolling Stone praised the album for its lyrical depth and musicality, highlighting how the band managed to evolve while still staying true to their roots. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, which is a testament to its quality and the band's continued relevance in the music industry.
Fans of the band often cite "Away From The World" as a return to form, with many appreciating the balance of upbeat tracks and more somber, reflective pieces. The album's closing track, "Sweet," is a beautiful, heartfelt song that encapsulates the album's themes of love and connection, leaving listeners with a sense of warmth and hope.
In terms of personal anecdotes, Matthews has shared that the writing process for this album was particularly collaborative, with the band members contributing ideas and melodies in a way that felt organic and spontaneous. This collaborative spirit is evident in the album's diverse sound, which incorporates various musical influences and showcases the individual talents of each band member.
Overall, "Away From The World" stands as a significant entry in the Dave Matthews Band discography. It not only highlights their musical evolution but also serves as a reflection of the times in which it was created. With its rich production, thoughtful lyrics, and the unmistakable chemistry of the band, this album is a must-listen for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. Whether you're looking for something to uplift your spirits or to ponder life's complexities, "Away From The World" offers a little bit of everything.
