Description

Eric Clapton & Friends' album "The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale", released on July 29, 2014, is a heartfelt tribute to the late JJ Cale, a musician whose understated style and songwriting had a profound influence on Clapton and many others. This album is not just a collection of covers; it is a celebration of Cale's legacy, brought to life by a stellar lineup of musicians who share a deep respect for his work.

JJ Cale, known for his laid-back, bluesy style and his role in pioneering the Tulsa Sound, passed away in 2013. Clapton, who had long admired Cale and had previously covered his songs like "After Midnight" and "Cocaine", felt compelled to honour his friend and collaborator. "The Breeze" is named after one of Cale's songs, and the album features 16 tracks that showcase the breadth of his songwriting.

The list of contributors to this project is impressive. Alongside Clapton, the album features performances by Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, Willie Nelson, John Mayer, and Derek Trucks, among others. Each artist brings their unique touch to Cale's songs, yet the album maintains a cohesive sound that stays true to Cale's spirit. The production, handled by Clapton and Simon Climie, is clean and respectful, allowing the songs to shine without unnecessary embellishments.

One of the standout tracks is "Call Me the Breeze", the song that inspired the album's title. Clapton's rendition captures the easygoing groove of the original while adding his own flair. Tom Petty's take on "Rock and Roll Records" is another highlight, blending his distinctive voice with Cale's relaxed vibe. Mark Knopfler's guitar work on "Someday" is a perfect match for the song's mellow tone, and Willie Nelson's version of "Songbird" is both tender and heartfelt.

What makes "The Breeze" special is the way it captures the essence of JJ Cale's music. His songs often have a simplicity that belies their depth, and the artists on this album respect that. They don't try to reinvent the songs; instead, they interpret them with a sense of reverence and affection. The result is an album that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

Critics and fans alike have praised "The Breeze" for its sincerity and the quality of its performances. It serves as a fitting tribute to JJ Cale, introducing his music to a new generation while reminding longtime fans of his genius. For Clapton, it is clearly a labour of love, and that passion comes through in every note.

"The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale" is more than just an album; it is a celebration of a musician whose influence can still be felt today. Whether you're a longtime fan of JJ Cale or new to his music, this album is a wonderful way to experience his unique sound and the respect he commanded among his peers. It's a reminder of the power of music to connect us, to inspire us, and to keep the spirit of an artist alive.
