Description
Hozier's sophomore album, "Wasteland, Baby!", released on March 1, 2019, is a rich tapestry of soulful melodies and introspective lyrics that continue to showcase the Irish singer-songwriter's unique blend of blues, folk, and rock influences. Following the massive success of his debut album, which featured the hit single "Take Me to Church," Hozier had set a high bar for himself. With "Wasteland, Baby!", he not only meets expectations but also expands his musical horizons.
The album opens with "Nina Cried Power," a powerful anthem featuring the legendary Mavis Staples. This track sets the tone for the album, celebrating the spirit of protest and the voices that have inspired change throughout history. It's a fitting introduction, as Hozier's music often delves into themes of social justice and personal reflection. The song was well-received, with Rolling Stone praising it as a "rousing call to action."
One of the standout tracks is "Movement," a song that beautifully captures the grace and fluidity of dance, both in its lyrics and its sweeping, orchestral arrangement. Hozier's voice is as captivating as ever, effortlessly conveying emotion and depth. The accompanying music video, featuring renowned ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, adds another layer of artistry to the song, highlighting the synergy between music and movement.
"Almost (Sweet Music)" is another gem on the album, a nostalgic ode to the power of music and its ability to evoke memories and emotions. The track is infused with a sense of warmth and familiarity, as Hozier name-drops classic jazz and blues songs that have left an indelible mark on his life. It's a testament to his skill as a songwriter that he can weave such personal stories into universally relatable themes.
Critically, "Wasteland, Baby!" was well-received, with many reviewers noting Hozier's growth as an artist. The Guardian praised the album for its "lush arrangements and lyrical depth," while Pitchfork highlighted Hozier's ability to "balance the personal and the political." The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, a testament to its widespread appeal and Hozier's growing fanbase.
In terms of production, "Wasteland, Baby!" was largely self-produced by Hozier, with some tracks co-produced by Markus Dravs, known for his work with artists like Arcade Fire and Coldplay. This hands-on approach allowed Hozier to maintain his artistic vision throughout the album, resulting in a cohesive and authentic sound.
The title track, "Wasteland, Baby!," closes the album on a contemplative note. It's a stripped-down, acoustic song that reflects on love and hope amidst chaos and uncertainty. Hozier's gentle vocals and the minimalist arrangement create an intimate atmosphere, leaving listeners with a sense of calm and introspection.
Overall, "Wasteland, Baby!" is a testament to Hozier's ability to craft songs that are both thought-provoking and sonically pleasing. It's an album that invites listeners to reflect on the world around them while finding solace in the beauty of music. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to Hozier's work, "Wasteland, Baby!" is an album that deserves a place in your collection.
