Description
John Mayer Trio's "Try!" is a live album released in 2005, showcasing the collaborative effort between John Mayer, bassist Pino Palladino, and drummer Steve Jordan. This album marks a departure from Mayer's earlier pop-oriented work, delving into blues, rock, and soul with a raw, live energy that highlights the trio's musicianship and chemistry. "Try!" is celebrated for its dynamic performances, virtuosic guitar work, and the intimate connection between the band and the audience, making it a standout project in Mayer's career and a testament to his versatility as an artist.
The album kicks off with "Who Did You Think I Was," a blues-rock track that immediately establishes the trio's tight, groove-oriented sound. Mayer's gritty guitar riff and soulful vocals, combined with Palladino's fluid bass lines and Jordan's driving rhythm, set a high standard for the rest of the album. The song's lyrics reflect Mayer's exploration of his musical identity and the public's perception of him as an artist, themes that recur throughout the album.
"Good Love Is on the Way" is another highlight, showcasing the trio's ability to craft catchy, upbeat tracks that still possess depth and musical complexity. The song's infectious groove and Mayer's engaging guitar solo demonstrate the band's capacity for creating music that is both accessible and sophisticated.
"Gravity," one of the album's more introspective tracks, stands out for its emotional depth and simplicity. The song's slow build and Mayer's expressive guitar work create a powerful sense of longing and vulnerability, showcasing his skill as a songwriter and guitarist. The live setting adds to the track's rawness and intensity, making it a memorable moment on the album.
The cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" highlights the trio's ability to reinterpret classic material in their unique style. Their version maintains the energy and spirit of the original while incorporating their distinctive blend of blues and rock, further showcasing Mayer's prowess as a guitarist and the trio's cohesive sound.
"Try!" is notable for the interplay between Mayer, Palladino, and Jordan, with each member bringing their extensive experience and musicality to the project. The album's production, which captures the spontaneity and energy of the live performances, allows the listener to experience the chemistry and dynamism of the trio as if they were present at the show.
In conclusion, "Try!" by John Mayer Trio is a dynamic and compelling live album that highlights John Mayer's exploration of blues and rock, marking a significant phase in his musical journey. The album's blend of energetic performances, masterful musicianship, and emotional depth makes it a standout release, showcasing a different facet of Mayer's talent and his ability to connect with audiences through the power of live music.
