With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll.
"His Greatest Hits: Volume II" is one of Johnny Cash's best albums to date, containing many fan favourite songs such as "A Boy Named Sue" and "Folsom Prison Blues" This album is a must have for any fan of the Country scene.

Johnny Cash's "His Greatest Hits, Volume II" is a compilation album that was released in 1971. This album is a follow-up to his earlier "His Greatest Hits, Volume I," and it features a selection of some of Cash's most beloved songs from his prolific career up to that point. As with many greatest hits collections, this album serves as a wonderful entry point for new listeners and a nostalgic journey for long-time fans.
One of the standout tracks on this album is "A Boy Named Sue," a song that became one of Cash's biggest hits. Written by Shel Silverstein, the song tells the humorous yet poignant story of a man with an unusual name and the father who gave it to him. Cash's live performance of this song at San Quentin State Prison is legendary, capturing the raw energy and connection he had with his audience. This track alone is worth the listen, as it showcases Cash's storytelling prowess and his ability to blend humor with heartfelt emotion.
Another highlight is "Folsom Prison Blues," a song that has become synonymous with Cash himself. Originally recorded in the 1950s, this track was revitalized by Cash's live performances at prisons, which added an authentic and gritty edge to the song's narrative about a man lamenting his life behind bars. The version included in this compilation captures the essence of Cash's rebellious spirit and his empathy for the downtrodden.
The album also features "If I Were a Carpenter," a duet with June Carter Cash. This song highlights the chemistry between Johnny and June, both musically and personally. Their voices blend beautifully, and the song's themes of love and devotion resonate deeply, making it a timeless classic.
Critically, "His Greatest Hits, Volume II" was well-received, as it encapsulated the breadth of Cash's work during a particularly fruitful period of his career. While it may not have garnered specific awards, the songs included have been celebrated individually over the years, contributing to Cash's enduring legacy as a country music icon.
The production of the album, like many of Cash's works, is straightforward and unpretentious, allowing his distinctive voice and the storytelling in his lyrics to take center stage. This approach is part of what has made Cash's music so enduring; it feels genuine and relatable, cutting through the noise with its simplicity and sincerity.
In terms of cultural significance, Johnny Cash's music has always been a bridge between different genres and audiences. His ability to appeal to country, rock, and folk fans alike is evident in this compilation. The songs on "His Greatest Hits, Volume II" reflect the themes that Cash often explored: love, redemption, hardship, and resilience. These themes have universal appeal, which is why Cash's music continues to resonate with listeners across generations.
Overall, "His Greatest Hits, Volume II" is a testament to Johnny Cash's impact on music and culture. It captures the essence of his artistry and provides a snapshot of his career during a time when he was at the height of his powers. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to his music, this album is a must-listen, offering a collection of songs that are as powerful today as they were when they were first recorded.
