Description

Producer Bob Johnston had the tape rolling inside San Quentin in 1969, with Bob Wootton newly on lead guitar after Luther Perkins’ passing. You can hear the recalibrated lineup click the instant Folsom Prison Blues kicks off, Wootton’s Tele bite prodding W.S. Holland’s snare into a brisk, dangerous shuffle. San Quentin draws the loudest eruption when Cash spits the title line, a live-wire exchange between stage and yard. Then comes A Boy Named Sue, part tall tale, part stand-up routine, and a rough-cut swing through Dylan’s Wanted Man that feels like it was learned in the van on the way in.

This LP pressing opens the room up and the low end sits deeper, so the crowd’s roar wraps around the Tennessee Three instead of smearing them. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Johnny Cash records online with us. File it next to Merle Haggard, but expect something rowdier and more conversational, with the audience acting like a fourth instrument.

It still works beautifully for a late drive or a tidy-up with the volume nudged past polite. Small details—boots on concrete, a breath before the punchline—come through without harshness. For a live country document that actually feels alive, this remains essential. Available to order online or in our Melbourne record store, your crate needs this one.
