Description
A late-night drive suits it; these performances unspool like road lines. Joni Mitchell - Archives Volume 4: Asylum Years (1976-1980) (4LP) catches her pivot from folk poet to jazz thinker with demos, session takes, and stage tapes that feel close at hand. You get the bones and sinew behind Hejira-era staples like Amelia and Coyote, then the Mingus period’s bite on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. Small details land differently: a freer vocal contour, guitar voicings hanging a touch longer, the band tugging at the time.
Across four records the space opens up, and the low end sits deeper, which flatters those fretless swells and brushed cymbals. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Joni Mitchell records online with us. In Melbourne, this is the set we hand to folks who love the studio albums but want to hear how the ideas grew legs.
It belongs right beside Hejira and Mingus on your shelf, and it makes sense alongside the meticulous late-70s craft you might reach for with Steely Dan. The sequencing reads like a narrative, tracing her curiosity from open-tuned confessionals to elastic, conversational phrasing. Amelia feels more solitary here; Coyote tumbles with an easier swing, and the Mingus material snaps with clear-eyed warmth. You come away understanding not just the songs, but the choices.
